Boxing Results: Sandor Martin and Jonathan Gonzalez Score Upset Wins!

By Ken Hissner: At the Chukchansi Park, Fresno, CA, over DAZN Eddie Hearn (Matchroom Boxing) presented in the Main Event former 4-division world champion Mikey Garcia losing a majority decision to EBU Euro champion Sandor “Arrasandor” Martin. WBO World Light Flyweight champion Elwin “La Pulga” Soto lost his title by split decision to No. 1 ranked Jonathan “Bomba” Gonzalez.

In the Main Event, former 4-division world champion welterweight Mikey Garcia, 40-2 (30), #143.6, of Moreno Valley, CA, was upset by majority decision to southpaw EBU European Super Lightweight champion Sandor “Arrasandor” Martin, 39-2 (13), #144, of Barcelona, SP, over ten rounds.

In the first two rounds, little happened as Garcia stalked Martin. In the third round, Garcia drove Martin against the ropes but got countered by a Martin right hook to the chin. In the fourth, Martin continued having Garcia following him, not able to cut off the ring. In the fifth round, a fight finally broke out, with Garcia having a slight edge.

In the sixth round, Martin seemed to even the score countering Garcia after taking a right on the chin and might have taken the seventh. In the eighth, Martin countered well, especially in the final seconds landing a left to the chin of Garcia, who can’t seem to get started.

In the ninth round, the ring rust of 20 months since his last fight and not able to pull the trigger enough, Garcia seemed to need a knockout while Martin beat him to the punch time and time again. In the tenth and final round, it was Martin finishing stronger of the two in what seemed like a major upset!

Scores were Young 95-95 while Caiz and Villarreal 97-93 twice as did this writer have it.

WBO World Light Flyweight champion Elwin “La Pulga” Soto, 19-2 (13), #107.8, of Mexicali, Baja CA, MEX, lost split decision and title to No. 1 WBO NABO champion ranked southpaw Jonathan “Bomba” Gonzalez, 25-3-1 (14), #108, of Caguas, PR, over 12 rounds.

In the first six rounds, Soto chased Gonzalez with little offense, unable to cut off the ring while getting countered by southpaw Gonzalez. In the seventh, Soto continued to walk in without a jab trying to hit Gonzalez, who hit and moved away.

In the eighth round, referee Jack Reiss warned Gonzalez for the second time about holding though he still out landed Soto. In the ninth, Soto warned for twisting the left arm of Gonzalez out of frustration. In the tenth, Soto finally gets some body shots in as Gonzalez was slowing down.

In the eleventh round, Gonzalez is back in control with Soto chasing. In the twelfth and final round, it continued with Gonzalez countering the frustrated Soto.

Scores were Sandoval 116-112 for Soto while Hoyle and Young 116-112 for Gonzalez with this writer 117-111 for Gonzalez. You have to wonder what fight Sandoval was watching.

Brock Jarvis, 20-0 (18), #134.8, of Marrickville, New So. Wales, Australia, stopped Alejandro “La Ranita” Frias, 13-5-2 (6), #134, of Tepic, Nayarit, MEX, at 2:04 of the fifth round of a 10 for the IBF Inter-continental lightweight title.

In the second round, Frias hurt Jarvis, whose hands were down, and punched him all over the ring as Jarvis tried holding on right up to the bell, almost getting knocked down while against the ropes it should have been ruled one. In between rounds, Jarvis trainer former world champion Jeff Fenech gave him instructions. In the third round, Jarvis came back well, continuing the inside fighting as he did in the first round.

In the fourth round, Jarvis had Frias against the ropes the entire round. In the fifth round, Jarvis had Frias hurt against the ropes forcing referee Edward Collantes to call a halt.

Light Flyweight southpaw Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez, 14-0 (10), #109.2, of San Antonio, TX, stopped Jose “El Nino” Alejandro Burgos, 18-5-1 (15), #110, of MEX, L.A., CA, at 1:23 of the fourth round of a 10.

In the first two rounds, Rodriguez showing angles, out-boxed Burgos. In the third, Burgos came back well, taking the round having drawn blood from the nose of Rodriguez. In the fourth round, Rodriguez countered a miss with a left on the chin, dropping Burgos for an 8-count. Upon rising, Rodriguez was all over Burgos, having him on the ropes and dropping as referee Raul Caiz, Sr. stepped in, stopping it.

Super Middleweight Diego Pacheco, 13-0 (10), #166.2, of L.A., CA, knocked out Lucas de Abreu, 12-1 (11), #166.4, of Sao Paulo, BRZ, and Miami, FL, at 2:21 of the eighth round of a 10.

Middleweight Nikita “White Chocolate” Ababiy, 11-0 (6), #159.2, of Brooklyn, NY, defeated Sanny “Sonny Prime Time” Duversonne, 11-5-2 (8), #160, of Avon Park, FL, over eight rounds.
