Teofimo Sr targeting December for Lomachenko rematch in New York
By Tommy Gray: Teofimo Lopez Sr says he wants to stage the rematch between his son undisputed lightweight champion Teofimo Jr against Vasily Lomachenko in December at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Speaking with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum last Saturday night, Teofimo Sr says he believes he can convince his son Teo to take on Lomachenko (15-0, 11 KOs) in a rematch.
Lomachenko got his final hurdle out of the way for a rematch with Teofimo last Saturday by stopping Masayoshi Nakatani (19-2, 13 KOs) in the ninth round at the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.
Now it’s up to IBF/WBA/WBC Franchise/WBO 135-lb champion Teofimo to his next opponent George Kambosos Jr taken care of so that he can face Loma.
Teofimo vs. Lomachenko II could be staged overseas
Contrary to the talk of Teofimo’s fight being moved to September 11th, Lopez Sr said the Kambosos match could happen on August 14th or even earlier than that.
Teofimo Sr says his son isn’t an undercard fighter, so there’s no chance he’ll fight in the co-feature on the Oscar De La Hoya vs. Vitor Belfort card on September 11th.
If Teofimo does fight on that date, he would be the main event, and De La Hoya vs. Belfort would be the chief support. It’s questionable whether De La Hoya and Triller Fight Promotions would agree to be the co-feature on the Teofimo vs. Kamboso card. That doesn’t make a lot of sense.
“As the promoter for Lomachenko and Teofimo, it’s my duty to bring them together for the fight that everybody wants to see, and it’s going to be a massive international fight,” said Bob Arum to ESPN.
“I’m fielding offers from different places in the world,” said Arum. “There will be a winner, and there will be a loser, but there will be two rich guys when it’s over.
“I know they [Teofimo and his dad] because when he signed his new contract in my house before he came down with COVID, he said, ‘No problem,'” said Arum about Teofimo having no issues fighting Lomachenko again.
“It’s a question of being compensated, and that’s the job of the promoter, and I’ll get them both well-compensated.
“Based on his [Lomachenko] performance tonight, it’ll be a really different kind of fight, but I can’t wait to see it,” said Arum.
It’ll be interesting to see if Arum can find a foreign country willing to pay a huge site fee to stage the rematch between Teofimo and Lomachenko.
If not, it’ll wind up back in the U.S, likely in New York, which is where Teofimo Sr wants it to take place.
Teofimo Sr wants Lomachenko rematch in December
“He [Lomachenko] made you a lot of money tonight because when we get that fight done, which we will, it’s going to be huge,” Arum said to Teofimo Lopez Sr, who walked up during his interview with ESPN.
“I was thinking about Lomachenko in the past, but after this performance, I think the public wants to see this fight, and I think I can convince my son to fight him again,” said Teofimo Sr about his belief that he can talk Teofimo Jr into fighting Loma again.
“I think after [George] Kambosos, it can be made. It’s going to be the biggest fight in the world, and we can make it happen in December in Madison Square Garden like we always do.
“My son’s record at Madison Square Garden is 6-0 with 6 knockouts. You already know that. So for the Heisman awards, why can’t we make it happen there, but I have to talk to him,” said Lopez Sr.
“You’re a real man, and your son is a real man. I hope he’s getting better,” said Arum to Teofimo Sr. “Believe me, we’re going to do that event.”
It’s going to be tricky to stage the Teofimo vs. Lomachenko rematch in December due to Teo’s title defense against Kambosos Jr. For Teofimo to swing back three months later in December after fighting Kambosos Jr in September, it might prove difficult.
If Teofimo defends against Kambosos on August 14th, it would be easier for Teo to squeeze in the Lomachenko rematch in December.
You can understand why Teofimo Sr wants his son to fight in December. He’d only be fighting once in 2021 if he didn’t return at the end of the year.
Lomachenko ready to give concessions to get Teofimo rematch
“You ask me about money? A question for me? I’ve always answered your question. I’ve always told in boxing, I only want the legacy, only legacy,” said Lomachenko when told that Teofimo’s team wanting concessions from him to make the rematch.
Lomachenko will have to take the smaller money this time for his fight with Teofimo, but he’ll still do well. If the fight pulls in a ton of pay-per-view buys on ESPN, both fighters will make millions from this fight. It’s a win-win for both.
