By Jeff Aronow: WBA ‘regular’ light welterweight champion Mario Barrios towered over the much smaller Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis at Friday’s weigh-in for their headliner fight this Saturday night on Showtime PPV at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

The scene looked unbelievable with the tiny 5’5 1/2″ Tank Davis (24-0, 23 KOs) looking up at the skyscraper 5’10” Barrios (26-0, 17 KOs) at the weigh-in.

Tank weighed in at 139 3/4 lbs, whereas Barrios came in at 139 1/2 lbs for their 12 round fight.

For all intent and purposes, the 26-year-old is moving up two weight classes from super featherweight to challenge Barrios for his secondary WBA 140-lb title.

While Tank does hold the WBA ‘regular’ 135-lb title, he’s only fought one time in the division, and that was against old-timer 39-year-old Yuriokis Gamboa in 2019.

The World Boxing Association unbelievably allowed Tank to fight Gamboa for their WBA secondary 135-lb belt rather than a more relevant contender like Jorge Linares, Ryan Garcia, or Javier Fortuna.

For Tank Davis, this is going to be a one-and-done affair, as he plans on moving back down to 130 after challenging Barrios for his WBA 140-lb title on Saturday.

Even if Tank beats Barrios, he’ll be moving back down in weight rather than staying at 140 and defending the belt against all comers. We already have former WBA 140-lb champion Regis Prograis licking his chops at the prospect of fighting the smallish Gervonta.

Prograis wants a piece of Tank Davis, and he feels confident that he would tear him up.

Undisputed light welterweight champion Josh Taylor also would like a fight against Davis, who he says is fighting for the WBA “Mickey Mouse” belt against Barrios, seeing that he’s got the real belt.

Erickson ‘The Hammer’ Lubin vs. Jeison Rosario

In the co-feature weights, #1 WBC Erickson Lubin (23-1, 16 KOs) weighed in at 153 1/2 lbs for his WBC junior middleweight title eliminator against former IBF/WBA 154-lb champion Jeison Rosario (20-2-1, 14 KOs).

The recently dethroned 26-year-old Rosario weighed in at 154 lbs looked in excellent shape. This is the first fight for Rosario since losing to WBC 154-lb champion Jermell Charlo by an eighth-round knockout last September in a unification fight.

Interestingly, Lubin and Rosario both share something in common, with both guys having been knocked out previously by Charlo. However, the winner of this fight will need to test themselves a second time against Jermell, as he still holds the WBC 154-lb title.

Lubin, 25, feels that his first-round knockout loss to Charlo in 2017 was a simple matter of him making a mistake. That fight took place when ‘The Hammer’ Lubin was only 21 and arguably too young to be facing the then 27-year-old Charlo.

Now four years older, Lubin has a five-fight winning streak, and he looks seasoned now.

If Lubin can beat Rosario, that would be a statement that he’s ready for the 31-year-old Jermell (34-1, 18 KOs), who is about to take on WBO 154-lb champion Brian Castano next month on July 17th for the undisputed championship.

Other weights on the Davis vs. Barrios card:

  • Carlos Adames – 157 lbs. vs. Alexis Salazar – 157 lbs.
  • Batyr Akhmedov – 139 ½ lbs. vs. Argenis Mendez – 139 ½ lbs.
