By William Lloyd: Daniel Dubois (16-1, 15 KOs) returned to his winning ways with an impressive second round knockout victory over the capable Bogdan Dinu (20-3, 16 KOs) on Saturday night in the main event to capture the vacant WBA interim heavyweight belt at the Telford International Centre in Telford, England.

The 6’5″ Dubois backed the 34-year-old Romanian Dinu up against the ropes and then landed a peach of a right hand to the head, sending him down for the knockout.

Referee Marcus McDonnell then halted the fight at 0:31 of round two to give the 23-year-old Dubois the victory.

It was a great performance by Dubois, who had his own way the entire fight. He was landing well with left hands and straight rights. Dinu didn’t possess the power to stand his ground and make a fight of it.

He was reeling from the get-go from the pressure that Dubois was putting on him. If Dinu had a steel chin like Joe Joyce, he could have made a fight of it and perhaps did some damage, but he couldn’t take the power of Dubois.

This was Dubois’ first fight back since being stopped in the 10th round last November by Joe Joyce. Dubois’s promoter did him a favor by matching him against Dinu, who came into the fight having lost two out of his four previous contests, both by knockout.

We really won’t know whether Dubois is fully back until he gets in there with a live body. It wouldn’t be a good idea for Dubois’ promoter to start crowing about the victory over Dinu and insisting that he fight WBA heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua straightaway.

Dubois isn’t ready for someone like Joshua or even a rematch with Joe Joyce. Dubois needs more season before he gets in there with the big boys. But for now, it’s good to see Dubois get back to winning and looking good against a beatable guy tonight.

It’ll be interesting to see what direction Dubois goes next. We already saw what happened when he fought Joyce, so that’s not a good idea for him to tangle with the 6’6″ fighter a second time.

Someone like Chris Arreola, Charles Martin, or Zhilei Zhang would be ideal for Dubois to fight next. Those are guys that aren’t too much of a threat to beating him, and he can look good.

Dubois is still young at 23, and he needs more time before he mixes it with the top five level competition.
