By Sean Jones: Devin Haney weighed in at 135 lbs on Friday to defend his WBC lightweight title against Jorge Linares on Saturday night on DAZN at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Linares weighed in at 134 lbs.

Both guys looked in great shape during the weight-in, so there should be no excuses on Saturday.

Lowkey build-up

When Haney turned around to pose for photos, he came close to elbowing Linares in the head. It didn’t look like it was intentional on Haney’s part to do that, but you never know.

The build-up to this fight has been one of the duller ones compared to some of the exciting fights that have been taking place in 2021.

Interestingly, when Haney was walking away, a member of his team was dressed in a loud blue suit and was doing a lot of jawing.

It looked reminiscent of how one of Muhammad Ali’s team used to do a lot of talking.

Haney is similar to Terence Crawford because he doesn’t do a lot of work to promote his fights, leaving it up to his promoter and his opponents to do the hard work.

It would help in the future for Haney to do a better job of hyping his fights because he’s trailing guys like Teofimo Lopez and Ryan Garcia. It’s great to have talent, but Haney puts boxing fans to sleep with his dull interviews.

Haney says Linares is underestimating him

“He’s underestimating some things about me, and it’ll show on Saturday night,” said Devin Haney about Linares. “I don’t know what type of fight he’ll bring.

“He’s got experience, so he switches it up, but we got a see. He’s saying that if I make a mistake, but what if I don’t make any mistakes? That’s the thing.

“I got to get in there and see what he brings to the table, but I’m ready. He may bring a totally different style to the fight.

“So I can’t underestimate him just because he’s been knocked out in the past and knocked out in early rounds.

“He’s been in wars, and he’s been stopped late. DeMarco stopped him in the 11th round. He won’t make it to those fights, so I don’t even know why he’s thinking.

“He makes a lot of mistakes. I can never underestimate him. He’s saying stuff that anybody can say. ‘Oh, I have experience.’ Okay, people get beat with experience, everybody.

“That’s how he became champion for the first time in his career. He can say, ‘If he makes a mistake, I can knock him out.’ Of course, I would say the same thing,” said Haney.
