Underard results from Texas

  • WBO light flyweight champion Elwin Soto (19-1, 13 KOs) defeated former IBF/WBA/WBO minimumweight champion Katsunari Takayama (32-9, 12 KOs) by a ninth round technical knockout in the co-feature. The referee Lawrence Cole jumped in and stopped the fight in what appeared to be a premature stoppage in the ninth. Takayama was taking shots as he coming forward, but he didn’t look hurt. Cole made a judgmental call to halt the fight due to some of the big shots the 37-year-old Takayama was taking in the round. The much bigger, stronger, and younger 24-year-old Soto had hurt Takayama in rounds 1, 6, and 8. Basically, Soto hurt Takayama in every round with big shots, but it didn’t stop the brave Japanese fighter from coming forward. Sotto was definitely gassing out from the pressure that Takayama was putting on him, and it would have been interesting to see how the fight would have played out.

  • Light welterweight Keyshawn Davis (3-0, 2 KOs) pitched a shutout with a lopsided six round unanimous decision over journeyman Jose Antonio Meza (7-5, 2 KOs).  The scores were 60-54, 60-54, 60-54.
  • Welterweight Kevin Davis (2-0, 1 KOs) was shockingly dropped in the fourth round but held on to defeat Jan Marsalek (8-3, 7 KOs) by a four-round unanimous decision. The scores were 38-37, 38-37, 38-37. The performance by the 24-year-old Davis leaves a lot of questions about whether this guy is going to be the fighter that some thought he’d be. Although he’s young, he should have been able to beat the Czech fighter a lot easier than he did if he was for real.
