By Mark Eisner: Former IBO super middleweight champion Chris Eubank Jr (30-0, 22 KOs) defeated domestic-level fighter Marcus Morrison (23-4, 16 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England.

The scores were 98-92, 98-92, 98-92. Boxing News 24 had it by the same 98-92 score for Eubank Jr. Eubank Jr was too good for Morrison and had him on the verge of being knocked out in rounds 2 and 6 when he threw a flurry of shots while he was against the ropes.

Although Eubank Jr claimed after the fight that he could have knocked Morrison out, it didn’t look that way. Eubank Jr was missing a lot of his shots when he was flurrying on Morrison, and he got nailed a couple of times by the younger, more powerful 28th-year-old fighter.

In the 10th, Eubank Jr was buzzed by a big left hook from Morrison when he unloading on him with a storm of shots. After getting clipped, Eubank Jr backed off and didn’t do much for the remainder of the round.

The 31-year-old Eubank Jr. looked like his physique had aged in the last two years since the last time he fought in 2019 against Matt Korobov.

“I felt good, that’s exactly what I did, I box. I had him hurt bad in the second round, I probably could have stopped him there,” said Eubank Jr after the fight. “But I wanted to get some rounds in.

“So I decided to box and work my way through the fight. At the same time, he’s a tough kid. I’ve knocked guys out with those kinds of shots.

“I’m a killer, When I see a knocking, I usually take it but I’m here to learn. You can’t get better by knocking a guy out in the second round.

“So, I decided to keep him in there. I’m not taking anything away from him. He’s a tough kid,” said Eubank Jr about Morrison.

“I gave him an A+ because he did a lot of what he was working on,” said trainer Roy Jones Jr. “A guy like Marcus is capable of knocking you out. He had a beautiful jab tonight.

“Tonight was part of a plan. it was rounds we needed,” said Kalle Sauerland. “This year is about two big fights. whether it’s Golovkin, Andrade.”

Eubank Jr needs more time to get the ring rust out because he doesn’t look like he’s ready to beat either Gennadiy Golovkin or Demetrius Andrade. If Eubank Jr fights either of those guys, he’ll lose and possibly get knocked out.
