Andy “Destroyer” Ruiz Defeated Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola!

By Ken Hissner: At Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, CA, Saturday over FOX PPV, Sampson Boxing – Sampson Lewkowicz and TGB Promotions – Tom Brown presented former Heavyweight champions Andy “Destroyer” Ruiz who defeated Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola over 12 rounds.

Former Heavyweight champion Andy “Destroyer” Ruiz, Jr., 34-2 (22), #256, of Imperial Valley, CA, came off the canvas in the first round to defeat Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola, 38-7-1 (33), #228.6, of L.A via Riverside, CA, over 12 rounds.

In the second round a chopping right from Arreola on the head dropped Ruiz for an 8-count. Before the round was over Arreola hurt Ruiz again. In the third round Arreola rocked Ruiz with a right on the chin early in the round. In the next three rounds Ruiz worked his way back into the fight stalking Arreola.

In the eighth round Ruiz hit Arreola on the left should that had him shaking it out. In the ninth round Ruiz hurt Arreola with a right to the body. Arreola looks frustrated. In the eleventh and twelfth rounds Ruiz continued to outland Arreola. Referee was Jack Reiss.
Scores were 118-109 twice and 117-110 as was this writer’s score.

“We had to do what we had to do and got the victory. He hurt me with that right hand in the first. If he wants to run it back we can have Ruiz and Arreola two,” said Ruiz. “I respected the judges. Did he win fine but did I win only two rounds? Let’s do it again,” said Arreola.

Super Welter southpaw Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora, 17-0-1 (12), #152.75, of Coachella, CA, stopped Jorge “Demonio” Cota, 30-5 (27), #153.5, of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MEX, at 2:35 of the fourth round for the WBC title eliminator of a scheduled 12 rounds.

In the first round it was a brawl with both getting in their shots while the 6’06” Fundora had the edge over Cota. In the second round Cota was cut on the right eyebrow. In the fourth round Fundora landed three punches rocking Cota. Seconds later Cota returned a punch when referee Ray Corona suddenly stepped in to stop the fight for some unknown reason and the fans along with Cota were upset.

WBA World and IBO Super Welter champ Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara, 28-3-3 (16), #159 ½, of Cuba and Houston, TX, knocked out Thomas “Cornflake” Lamanna, 30-5-1 (12), #159, of Millville, NJ, for the vacant WBA World Middleweight title, at 1:20 of the first round of a scheduled 12 rounds.

In the first round Lamanna dropped his hands and was wide open when southpaw Lara landed a lead left on the side of his head and down went Lamanna without a count from referee Thomas Taylor.

Featherweight southpaw Eduardo “Zurdito” Ramirez, 25-2-3 (12), #125 ½, of Los Mochis, Sinola, MEX, stopped southpaw Isaac “Canelito” Avelar, 17-3 (10), #125, of Aguascalientes, MEX, for the WBA interim World Feather title, at 1:16 of the third, of a scheduled 12 rounds.

In the third round Ramirez missed a left then rocked Avelar with a right hook on the chin and down he went for an 8-count. Upon getting up Ramirez was up while Ramirez was all over him forcing referee Gerard White to call a halt.

Welter Omar Figueroa, Jr., 28-2-1 (19), #146 ½, of Weslaco, TX, was stopped by Abel Ramos, 27-4-2 (21), #146 ½, of Casa Grande, AZ, at the end of six in a scheduled 12 rounds.

In the first four rounds it was all Ramos with a mouse under the left eye of Figueroa. In the sixth round Ramos hurt Figueroa with body shots having him badly hurt at the bell. In the corner of Figueroa he quit.

Super Welter southpaw Jesus “Mono” Ramos, 16-0 (14), #149 ¼, of Casa Grande, AZ, easily defeated Olympian Javier “El Intocable” Molina, 22-4 (9), #150, of Norwalk, CA, over 10 rounds.

In the first four rounds Ramos followed Molina around the ring out working him with little resistance in return. In the sixth round Ramos suffered a small cut on the outside of his right eyebrow. In the seventh round referee Gerard White took away a point from Molina for continuous rabbit punching. In the next three rounds it was all Ramos.

Scores were 97-92 and 99-90 twice as was this writer’s.

18 year-old Lightweight Fernando Angel Molina, 6-0 (3), #133 ½, of Guadalajara, MEX, defeated Prisco Marquez, 4-3-1 (1), #135, of Austin, TX, over 6 rounds.

The taller Molina won the first two rounds. In the third round Marquez landed a good left hook on the chin of Molina. Half a minute later he paid for it with a Molina right on the chin in the final thirty seconds. In the fifth round referee Ray Corona took away a point from Marquez for continuous rabbit punching. Molina took the sixth and final round outworking a game Marquez.
