Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez just bulldozed his way into history, crushing Arsen “Feroz” Goulamirian to snatch the WBA Cruiserweight Super World Champion title. The fight was a straight-up war, with Zurdo and Feroz throwing down like there was no tomorrow. Ramirez, the Mexican machine, now stands as the first from his country to dominate both the super middleweight and cruiserweight divisions. Every round was a slugfest, but in the end, the judges had it clear as day, 110-118, crowning Zurdo as the new king of the cruiserweights and handing Goulamirian his first taste of defeat.
Ramirez was all fire in the aftermath, saying it was all about the hard work and the dream. Goulamirian, though beaten, wasn’t bowed, tipping his hat to Ramirez’s slick moves but itching for a comeback.
The night was packed with VIPs, from Oscar De La Hoya to Cedric the Entertainer, all streaming in to see the spectacle at the YouTube Theater, live on DAZN.
The co-main event wasn’t for the faint-hearted either. Alexis “Lex” Rocha came back with a vengeance, steamrolling over Fredrick “General Okunka” Lawson in a welterweight showdown that ended with Lawson eating canvas in the seventh, courtesy of Rocha’s relentless assault.
And don’t even get me started on Ricardo Sandoval’s demolition job on Carlos Buitrago. Sandoval was a beast in there, making it look like a training session until the doc had to step in and call it quits in the eighth.
Santiago “Somer” Dominguez and Jose Sanchez threw down in a welterweight scrap that had the judges split, but Dominguez edged it out to keep his undefeated streak alive.
Joel Iriarte set the tone for the night, opening with a bang by sending Kevin Aguirre packing in the first round, a statement stoppage that had the crowd on their feet.
And for a touch of the unexpected, Rowdy Montgomery came out of nowhere, laying out Kareem Hackett with a headshot that nabbed him the WBA Intercontinental Title in a shocker that had everyone talking.
Ronaldo Mancilla made a splash in his pro debut, dropping Rueben Johnson like a sack of potatoes in the first, proving he’s one to watch.
