By Mark Eisner: Gennadiy Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs) looked like the GGG of old in successfully defending his IBF middleweight title in defeating Kamil Szeremeta (21-1, 5 KOs) by a seventh-round stoppage on DAZN from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, Florida.

Golovkin, 38, dropped Szeremeeta four times in knocking him down in rounds one, two, four, and seven. The referee Telis Assimenios halted the fight after the seventh due to Szeremeta having taken too much of a beating.

It was target practice for Golovkin, as he was hurting Szeremeta at will with his hots. By the time the fight was halted, it was target practice.

Here are the live results for the action:

Choi was the busier of the two but Silgado landed a lot of huge shots that made the fight entertaining. The judge’s scores were 99-91, 98-92, and 97-93. Choi is someone to keep an eye on in the future.

Preview:

Gennadiy Golovkin (40-1-1 35 KO) is making his long-awaited first defense of his IBF middleweight title against Kamil Szeremeta (21-0, 5 KOs.

GGG, 38, would have been back earlier this year in February to defend against his IBF mandatory Szeremeta, but he couldn’t do it with the pandemic.

Golovkin making 21st title defense

Tonight, Golovkin will be making his 21st title defense of his career, and he’s looking forward to making history. Golovkin needs to keep winning to keep up with Canelo Alvarez, who he potentially could be facing in May of next year.

Canelo (53-1-2, 36 KOs) is fighting this Saturday against Callum Smith in San Antoni, Texas on DAZN. If Canelo and Golovkin both win, there’s an outside chance they’ll meet in early 2021.

The Golovkin vs Szeremeta undercard is a mixed back, but there are a few gems like super middleweight John Ryder and unbeaten Ali Akhmedov fighting in separate bouts.

“I saw that quote this morning and I thought, ‘Did he say that?'” said Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn about a moment from Golovkin that he might kill Oscar De La Hoya if they fought. ”

“I don’t mind that comment because it comes from a gentleman in GGG. For me, that’s a very dangerous position for Oscar De La Hoya. Any guy that is coming off of a long period of inactivity, and quite frankly enjoying himself for a long period of time, you don’t want to get in the ring with Gennadiy Golovkin.

“Who knows in boxing? I would think that Gennadiy is a very focused individual. We did the Zoom call this week, and the one thing he didn’t want to talk about was Canelo Alvarez.

“The only thing he’s focused on is Szeremeta, but you can’t ignore the fact that these two legends of the sport are fighting within 24 hours of each other, okay?

“So, Gennadiy fights on Friday, and Canelo on Saturday. It doesn’t take a genius to know the DAZN executives are saying, ‘Two wins means Cinco de Mayo, the third great fight [between Golovkin and Canelo],'” said Hearn.
