Danny Garcia not giving up after loss to Errol Spence

By Dan Ambrose: Danny Garcia says he’s not going to stop “trying to be great” following his 12 round unanimous decision loss to Errol Spence Jr last Saturday night. Garcia, 32, gave it his best shot, but Spence outworked with his high-volume attack to win by the scores 117-111, 116-112, and 116-112.

After the fight, Garcia’s dad Angel Garcia expressed disappointment about how Danny didn’t throw enough punches to get the ‘W.’

Danny showed that he still has enough talent to be one of the major players, but he doesn’t have the right ingredients to be a world champion right now.

The game plan was for Garcia to let his hands go more so that he could more than match Spence’s output, but unfortunately, he slipped back into his old way of fighting.

Garcia (36-3, 21 KOs) looked like a beaten man at the post-fight news conference after the fight at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, but it appears that he’s gotten a new outlook on his career.

Danny Garcia vows to fight on

Whether Danny wants to admit it or not, he’s now 0-3 against top welterweights since he moved up to the 147-lb division in 2014, and he’s going to need to decide what his goal is if he’s to stay in this weight class.

“I’m still that dude and I’ll never stop trying to be great,” said Danny ‘Swift’ on his Instagram site. “All of the greats have losses. A legend is fighting the best win, lose, or draw.

“I take my wins like my losses and continue to grow from all my life experiences in and out of the ring. The journey continues. What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.”

It’s probably pointless for Danny Garcia to fight his former conquerors Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter, again. Those fighters are looking for a bigger game than Danny, and they likely won’t be interested in facing him right now.

The top guy that Danny hasn’t fought yet is WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford, who is needy due to the lackluster opposition Top Rank has been matching him against for the past 12 years.

If Garcia puts it out there that he’s interested in facing the unbeaten Crawford (37-0, 28 KOs), his promoters at Top Rank might take him up on his offer.

Would Crawford fight Danny Garcia?

It’s vital that Top Rank match Crawford against one of the top welterweights in 2021 to have a better chance of re-signing him when his contract expires next October.

While it’s true that Garcia just lost to Spence, he’s still considered a top-five contender at 147, and he might be popular enough to appease Crawford to get him to re-up with Top Rank when it comes time for his contract to be renewed.

Even as a gatekeeper at 147, Garcia can make more money than he’d get if he moves back down to 140, which is where he should be given his lack of size and poor work rate.

At this point, Crawford would be making a huge upgrade in his opposition if he agreed to defend his WBO title against Danny. It doesn’t matter that Garcia, 32, is coming off of a defeat against Spence. Danny is still better than anyone Crawford has fought before during his 12 round year career, so he should be open to a fight against him.

Apart from Thurman, Crawford, and Porter, there’s no one popular that Garcia can fight to get a good payday. Manny Pacquiao isn’t going to fight Garcia with his coming off a defeat against Spence because the boxing fans would say he’s ducking Errol.

Judah says Danny Garcia needs a new trainer

“Danny has had a lot of hard fights, and it caught up to him,” said Zab Judah. “The trigger that he was looking to pull, he was unable to pull.

“Is he a bum, though? No, he’s not a bum. He’s a very tough warrior and has a hell of a chin. A lot of fighters reach a plate, and they need a new face.

“There’s nothing wrong with his dad [Angel Garcia], but he needs a fresh face, some fresh information, and some fresh instructions.

“You’re never going to forget what dad taught you and how dad put it together, but you’re going to have an add on. New fresh energy, new fresh faces.

“Sometimes you got to go back in your career and rejuvenate the situation all over again, and I think that’s what Danny Garcia might need to happen right now.

“Go get a new face, new people, and new energy. That’s it, and that might make a difference with everything Danny Garcia is doing right now,” said Judah.

The way that Danny looks up to his dad Angel, it’s not likely that he would swap him out for a new trainer.

Although Garcia should change Angel, he probably won’t do it because how could he walk away from his dad? Angel helped take him this far in his career, and who’s to say that a different trainer would improve him to a great extent?

Would a new trainer help Danny?

In listening to some of the things that Angel said at the post-fight news conference last Saturday, he had the right game plan for Garcia to win. Angel said that he wanted Danny to throw more punches, but he didn’t do it.

Like Judah was saying, Garcia couldn’t pull the trigger on his punches. It’s unclear whether that’s age starting to show or simply a case of Danny not being able to change the way he’s always fought. Sometimes with people, you can’t teach them new things because they’re set in their ways.

Garcia might have been afraid to throw more punches because it would have resulted in Spence hitting him a lot more than he did. As we saw, Garcia’s left eye was badly swollen, and his face badly marked.

The former two-division world champion Garcia took all that damage with him not throwing a lot of shots. If Garcia had doubled his punch out-put, he would have been hit a lot more, and it’s possible that he would have been stopped due to his left eye closing on him.
