By Mark Eisner: Devin Haney (25-0, 15 KOs) retained his WBC lightweight title with a dull 12 round unanimous decision over a defensive former IBF/WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (30-4, 18 KOs) on Saturday night on DAZN from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

The scores were 118-109, 120-107, and 20-107. Boxing News 24 had Haney winning by a 120-107 score. Gamboa, 38, was awful tonight, and just came to survive. It was a similar performance by Gamboa from his previous one against Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis last December.

Haney with a lot to prove

Haney (24-0, 15 KOs) puts his WBC 135-lb belt on the line against the 38-year-old Gamboa in the headliner. What’s interesting is that Haney met Gamboa years ago when he was a little kid, and he had a lot of respect for him.

But in the build-up of tonight’s fight, the 22-year-old Haney has talked nonstop about wanting to beat the 38-year-old  Gamboa worse than anyone has ever done to him before.

You get the impression that Haney is angry and bitter towards Gamboa for some reason, and it’s hard to understand what is driving this emotion. It seems very obvious that Haney has a chip on his shoulder about his pecking order among the elite at 135.

So by Haney beating Gamboa worse than anyone else has during his 16-year pro career, it’ll validate him in his own eyes and in the eyes of some of the boxing fans.

The younger fighter Haney, 21, is the favorite against Gamboa, and he’s got a lot of advantages over the Cuban fighter. Gamboa is older, smaller, and coming off a bad beating. Haney is the A-side, and that could factor in if the contest goes the full 12.

Although Haney suffered a shoulder injury last year in November, the problem has been taken care of and he’s now 100% ready for the fight

Gamboa coming off of a loss

Thus far, the fans don’t think too highly of Haney for picking Gamboa due to his age, and the fact that he’s coming off of a 12th round knockout against Gervonta Davis.

To top it off, Gamboa is also coming off of a torn Achilles. With all the problems that Gamboa has had recently, it seems like a poorly thought out fight to try and increase Haney’s popularity.

In the undercard, two huge heavyweight bouts will be taking place between these excellent fighters:

  •  Zhilei Zhang (21-0, 16 KOs) vs. Devin Vargas (22-6, 9 KOs)
  • Filip Hrgovic (11-0, 9 KOs) vs. Rydell Booker (26-3, 19 KOs)

There’s a lot of pressure on Haney’s shoulders tonight, seeing that he’s got to try and put in better performance that WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis and IBF/WBA/WBC/WBO unified champ Teofimo Lopez from their recent wins.

Teofimo holds all the titles at 135 after beating Vasily Lomachenko last October in a unification. Haney has been trying to convince the boxing world that Teofimo still isn’t the unified champion at 135, but it’s not working. The fans do seem Teofimo as the undisputed champion, and they view Haney as a belt holder.
