Daniel Jacobs wants Canelo Alvarez vs. Callum Smith winner

By Dan Ambrose: The ‘Miracle Man’ Daniel Jacobs (36-3, 30 KOs) is already looking past his opponent Gabriel Rosado (25-12-1, 14 KOs) this Friday towards the winner of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Callum Smith fight on December 19th.

Jacobs says he wants to fight the Canelo-Smith winner, which could very be Canelo (53-1-2, 36 KOs). Daniel, 33, already lost to Canelo by a 12 round decision last year, but now he wants another fight against him.

With the money, Jacobs made the last time he fought Canelo, who can blame him for wanting another fight with him.

Alvarez hasn’t revealed what his plans are after he faces WBA Super World super middleweight champion Callum (27-0, 19 KOs) on December 19th at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, but it’s likely that he’ll face Gennadiy Golovkin on Cinco de Mayo in May 2021.

No demand for Canelo vs. Jacobs II

“I would love the winner of that fight, and I feel the winner would be the best man,” said Jacobs when asked if he’d like to fight the winner of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Callum Smith fight.

“This is boxing. No one ever knows. This is a situation where you have both guys in their prime. It’s going to be hard to tell [who wins Canelo-Smith].

“I’m going to be watching with an invested eye, but I also have a mark to make on Friday night, and after this, I can put myself in a position to fight the winner of this or put myself in the position to fight for a world championship in general, that’s what I’m going after.

Canelo can make a lot more money fighting GGG (40-1-1, 35  KOs) third time going over the old ground against Jacobs, who has been underachieving in a major way against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and now against 34-year-old journeyman Gabe Rosado.

There are a right and a wrong way in going about trying to earn a fight against superstar Canelo Alvarez.

The right way is to take on the most talented fighters in the division such as Edgar Berlanga, David Benavidez, Caleb Plant, and Callum Smith. The wrong way is to do what Jacobs has done in taking on the over-the-hill Chavez Jr and Rosado.

Daniel not taking risks

Jacobs has taken the slacker’s approach to try and get a rematch with Canelo, and that’s not likely to give him what he wanted. Obviously, with DAZN giving Jacobs the green light for the mismatches against Rosado and Chavez Jr, it’s been too hard to resist.

After all, who would turn down good money for easy fights like the ones Jacobs is taking. But the downside is, Jacobs has arguably hurt his chances of getting a rematch against Canelo due to his backdoor method in trying to fight him again.

If Canelo were to fight Jacobs again, he would be sending a message to other fighters that they don’t need to fight quality opposition to try and fight him. They can do what Jacobs has done in taking soft fights and then calling out Canelo.

Rosado and Jacobs will be in the main event this Friday night on November 27th at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Hollywood, Florida.
