Boxing Results: Daniel Jacobs defeats Gabriel Rosado

By Sean Jones: In one of the worst performances of the career of Daniel ‘Miracle Man’ Jacobs (37-3, 30 KOs), he beat fringe middleweight contender Gabriel Rosado (25-13-1, 14 KOs) by a 12 round split decision in a fight at 168 on Friday night at the Friday night at Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, Florida.

Jacobs, 33, fought like an older fighter that could no longer pull the trigger on his shots, and he failed to set himself apart from his opponent Rosado. During Jacobs’ best rounds in the fight, he averaged only 10 punches landed per round.

Rosado landed at a slightly higher clip than Jacobs, but he looked like he was the one in charge of the fight due to him coming forward most of the time.

Jacobs didn’t look like an elite-level fighter

Daniel fought like he wasn’t firing on all eight cylinders, and you have to wonder if his fight with Canelo Alvarez last year took something out of him. Jacobs didn’t show the kind of skills and ability that we’re used to seeing from the top 168-pounders.

The judge’s scores were 115-113 for Rosado, 115-113, 115-113 for Jacobs.  It was a big surprise that Rosado was able to fight so competitively with Jacobs, which was supposed to be a mismatch.

Jacobs had talked for weeks about him fighting at a higher level than Rosado, but we didn’t see that tonight Jacobs looked like a shot fighter, who had gotten old and couldn’t let his hands go.

It was lucky that Jacobs was in there with Rosado rather than a dangerous puncher like Callum Smith, David Benavidez, Canelo, or Gennady Golovkin.

Jacobs’ performance could work for him to help him get fights against some of the belt-holders at 168. After how Jacobs fought tonight, the super middleweight champions will likely view him as an easy mark and want to fight him.

As far as Canelo and Golovkin, they probably won’t want to waste their time with Jacobs because he’s too boring to fight at this point. Jacobs didn’t do a great job of building interest for his fight with Rosado with his low-key approach to marketing the fight.

Maybe it would be a good idea for Jacobs to move back down to 160 and look to go after WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo.

Daniyar Yeleussinov KOs Julius Indongo

In the fight of the night, welterweight Daniyar Yeleussinov (10-0, 6 KOs) knocked down Julius Indongo (23-3, 12 KOs) twice in stopping him in the second round in the co-feature bout on the card.

The 2016 Olympic gold medalist Yeleussinov showed power in knocking the 37-year-old Indongo down in rounds one and two with left hands.

Indongo, a former IBF/WBA light-welterweight champion, left himself open by being wild with his punches. Yeleussinov was able to capitalize on that and get him out of there. After the knockdown in the second round, Indongo wasn’t able to get back to continue.

This performance Yeleussinov is what boxing fans were expecting to see from Jacobs tonight, but he was incapable of doing it for whatever reason.

Other results on Friday night’s card:

Middleweight prospect Nikita Ababiy (10-0, 6 KOs) beat Brandon Maddox (7-4-1, 5 KOs) by a six-round unanimous decision. It wasn’t the type of performance the 22-year-old Ababiy needed to show that he’s improving.  The judge’s scores were 59-55, 59-55, and 59-55.

The 34-year-old Maddox landed many punches on Abibiy, and he made the fight closer than it should have been. In rounds five and six, Maddox connected with long right hands that snapped Abibiy’s head back.

What didn’t help Ababiy was his long hair that covered his eyes. He had a sheepdog look with his bangs hanging down in front of his eyes, which might have impaired his vision.

Lightweight contender Emmanuel Tagoe (32-1, 15 KOs) beat Mason Menard (36-5, 25 KOs) by a 10 round majority decision in a dull fight.

Tagoe jabbed and stayed on the move for the full 10 rounds. The judges had it 95-95, 96-94, and 98-92 for Tagoe. It wasn’t the type of performance that Tagoe needed or him to get the attention of the 135-lb champions Devin Haney, Gervonta Davis, or Teofimo Lopez.

The hard-hitting heavyweight prospect Mahammadrasul Majidov (3-0, 3 KOs) beat  Sahret Delgado (8-0, 7 KOs) by a third-round knockout. The 34-year-old two-time Olympian Majidov looked really slow and didn’t look like a threat to any of the heavyweight division champions.
