By Sean Jones: Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada (41-3, 28 KOs) went through pure fire to beat the always tough Carlos “Principe” Cuadras (39-4-1, 27 KOs) by an 11th round knockout win in a war on Friday night TV Azteca Studios in Mexico City.

This wasn’t supposed to be this hard for a fight for the highly skilled WBC flyweight champion Estrada, but he was dropped hard in the third round by the 32-year-old Cuadras, and he took countless massive shots.

But in the end, Estrada, 30, recovered and took control over the fight to drop Cuadraas twice in the 11th round. Interestingly enough, Cuadras kept fighting hard after the second knockdown, and he was catching Estrada with some big shots with little flurries that he was throwing.

Estrada hurt Cuadras with a left and then nailed him with several more shots that caused him to lose his balance. At that point, the referee stepped in and halted the contest.

In the third round, Cuadras landed a big left hook to Estrada’s head that dropped him along the ropes. It was more of a balance thing, but it was still a massive shot. Cuadras tried to finish Estrada after the knockdown, but it was no use. He wasn’t that badly hurt, and he was able to make it out of the round, albeit after eating a lot of huge punches from Cuadras.

The punch accuracy for Estrada is what helped him dominate the action from the fourth round. Cuadras was looking punches and looking hurt in almost every.

Cuadras would keep coming back with flurries in which he would unload with both hands. Estrada did a good job of dodging most of the punches that Cuadras would throw during these spurts, but he was still getting hit with many punches.

By the end of the fight, Estrada looked bruised, and his nose appeared twisted and reddened as if it might have been broken.

Estrada, 30, will now be fighting WBA super flyweight champion Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez next in early 2021. We’ll have to see what Estrada has left after this fight, as it might have taken something out of him.

In contrast, Chocolatito had an easier fight on the card in beating Israel Gonzalez by a 12 round unanimous decision in the co-feature bout. Chocolatito didn’t take nearly as much punishment in his win over Israel.

The way that Estrada fought tonight, it’s going to be hard for Chocolatito to beat him in their rematch next year.

Eight years ago, Chocolatito got the better of Estrada in beating him by a wide 12 round decision in 2012, but he was in his prime back then and young at 25. Chocolatito is now 33, and not the guy that he used to be.

Matchroom Boxing would do well if they delayed the Estrada vs. Chocolatito rematch, and instead have the Estrada-Cuadras trilogy fight take place. Cuadras’ exciting fighting style would make for a more interesting fight with Estrada than Chocolatito, who has shown zero power for this weight class. Chocolatito is more of a light flyweight [108 lbs] than a super flyweight [115].
