By Jeff Aronow:  Shawn Porter (31-3-1, 17 KOs) won an easy 12 round unanimous decision over Sebastian Formella (22-1, 10 KOs) in an IBF welterweight title eliminator on Saturday night on Fox Sports at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California.

The former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Porter, 32, looked great in pound out a lopsided 12 round decision by the scores 120-108, 120-108, and 120-108. Boxing News 24 saw it for Porter by an identical 120-108.

Porter appeared to take it easy on the 33-year-old German fighter Formella in the last three rounds of the contest from the 10th to the 12th. Otherwise, he likely would have knocked him out.

Porter, who was coming off of a close 12 round split decision loss to Errol Spence Jr last September, hit Formella with everything but the kitchen sink tonight. Shawn was hitting Formella was hooks, overhand rights, jabs, uppercuts, and everything, but the German fighter took everything he could dish out.

Formella’s ability to handle the punishment that Porter dished out was impressive, but it looked like Showtime took it easy on him in the end. Porter needed rounds, and he wasn’t going to plow through Formella quickly because it would have been a self-defeating move on his part.

Porter sends a message to Spence

“He was tough. I think after six rounds my dad [trainer Kenny Porter] said, ‘Okay, he’s taken these punches and he’s going to keep taking them. Keep the pressure on him and keep dogging him,'” said Porter after the fight.

“I’m still here. I’m not going anywhere,” said Porter in sending a message to Errol Spence.

What’s unclear is why the International Boxing Federation agreed to sanction the Porter-Formella fight as an official IBF 147-lb title eliminator, as Formella has no experience against world-class opposition before tonight.

He didn’t fight at a level that one expects from a guy that is competing in a title eliminate. The fight looked like more the type of contest that one would see between a world-class fighter and an over-matched journeyman.

The one-sided nature of tonight’s fight between Foremall and Porter reflects poorly on the IBF because they sanctioned this mismatch when they have rejected it.

With the victory tonight, Porter is now the IBF mandatory challenger to 147lb champion Errol Spence Jr. Hopefully, for the boxing publics’ sake, we don’t see a rematch between Porter and Spence anytime soon. Spence already beat Porter, and a rematch would be pointless. Boxing fans want to ee Spence take n WBO champion Terence Crawford, WBA champ Manny Pacquiao, and Keith Thurman.
