By Jeff Aronow: In a sloppy foul-plagued fight, former WBO super bantamweight champion Jessie Magdaleno (28-1, 18 KOs) defeated the hard-hitting Yenifel Vicente (36-5-2, 28 KOs) by a 10th round disqualification on Thursday night on ESPN at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Referee Robert Byrd stopped the fight after the hard-hitting Vincente hit the exhausted Magdaleno with a low blow. Earlier in the fight, Byrd had docked a point from the 33-year-old Vicente for a low blow in round four. It looked like the referee went overboard in taking away points. It’s too bad he didn’t show a little more restraint.

He also took an additional point from Vicente in hitting Magdaleno after he was hurt from the low blow.

Vicente lost patience with Magdaleno

In the end, it looked like Vicente lost his patience with Magdaleno’s running and spoiling tactics. Magdaleno looked timid in the last four rounds, and very tired. Vicente wanted Magdaleno to stand and fight, but he didn’t have the gas tank to accommodate. Further, it looked like Magdaleno didn’t want to taste Vicente’s power because he was throwing some big shots.

In the end, it’s hard to know if Vicente chose to hit Magdaleno low in the 10th round out of disgust for his spoiling tactics, but it sure looked that way to me. Vicente is an old school fighter, who expects his opponents to stand and fight. Magdaleno didn’t want any part of that. Isaac Dogboe knocked that out of him back in 2018.

Earlier in the fight, Magdaleno knocked Vicente down in rounds one and five with hard shots.

Jessie gassed in the second half of fight

The ending of the fight wasn’t great, but it was an exciting match. Magdaleno’s chronically poor stamina showed up in this fight big time in the second half of the contest. He gassed out in the same way he did in his 11th round knockout loss to Isaac Dogboe in April 2018.

That fight was at 122, and it was thought that Magdaleno’s stamina would be improved in moving up to 126. It hasn’t. Magdaleno is still gassing out, and it’s unclear what kind of future he has at 126.

Had this been a good fighter that Magdaleno was facing tonight, he probably would have lost. He’s not going to win too many fights fading after five rounds.

If Magdaleno is going to continue to fight like this, he might want to move up to 130. Maybe his stamina will improve in that weight division.

Magdaleno had been considering retiring after his loss to Dogboe, and he might want to revisit that idea. Jessie doesn’t have the stamina to fight hard for more than five rounds.

This is probably an issue that Magdaleno has had from day one since he started his career in 2010, but he had so many early knockouts that couldn’t see the problems.

When Magdaleno beat Nonito Donaire by a 12 round decision in 2016, we started seeing his fatigue problems for the first time. Up until then, the longest Magdaleno had fought was eight rounds a couple of times.

But now that Magdaleno is being extended into the second half of his fights, you can see clearly that he doesn’t have the engine.

Magdaleno wants Shakur Stevenson or Gary Russell Jr next

“He was just a dirty fighter,” said Magdaleno after the fight in talking about Vicente. “Once he felt the power, I put him down with a right hook. Even with the jab, I put him down. He felt the power.

“He didn’t know how to come in because I was dodging everything. So his way was to fight dirty and hit me low. He was a rugged fighter, he was a tough veteran. I give him that. I take my hat off to him. He was a tough veteran, and he knew what he was doing.

“Like I said, his way was to hit me low and get me in his fight game. I’m too much of a smart fighter. I knew I had to move and keep moving and keep him on the outside and catch him when he was coming in with those big right hands.

“I want all of them. I don’t give a s*** who it is. I want all them,” said a testy-sounding Magdaleno when asked if he’d be interested in fighting WBO 126-pound champion Shakur Stevenson or WBC champ Gary Russell Jr. “I’m at the door with the WBC for Gary Russell. Gary Russell, I’m coming, baby, so be ready,” said Magdaleno.
