Errol Spence vs. Terence Crawford: Will they ever fight?

By Boxing News - 05/07/2020 - Comments

By Jim Maltzman: Tim Bradley doubts that Errol Spence Jr. will ever face Terence Crawford because he feels ducking the fight. As one of Crawford’s biggest fans, Bradley believes that IBF/WBC welterweight champion Spence Jr. (26-0, 21 KOs) doesn’t want to fight him.

What reinforces Bradley’s belief about Spence lacking the nerve to face WBO 147-pound champion Crawford (36-0, 27 KOs) is the fact that he hasn’t been willing to take the fight. Bradley believes that Spence could make the Crawford match happen if he wanted to, but he just hasn’t shown the willingness to face him.

Crawford’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank doesn’t share Bradley’s negative outlook on the Spence-Crawford fight not happening. Arum maintains that if not for the global pandemic that surfaced last December, we would see Crawford and Spence fight in 2020.

Despite the bad luck, Arum remains optimistic about the Crawford vs. Spence fight taking place in 2021 after the pandemic disappears.

Bradley: Crawford vs. Spence will never happen

“I don’t think we’ll ever see them fight; I don’t. It’s terrible,” Bradley said to Fighthype. in talking about a fight between Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford. “He doesn’t want to fight Terence Crawford,” said Bradley in saying that Spence is avoiding the Crawford fight.

Bradley needs to be patient and understand that the Crawford vs. Spence fight will happen in due time. Spence says he wants the fight, but there’s not much he can do about it right now. We have a lockdown of all sports, and besides that, Spence is coming off of a bad car crash. He has a new of choppers, and he’s got to get accustomed to those.

Spence will be taking on Danny Garcia next, and then after that, there’s no reason why he and Crawford can’t fight in a unification match in 2021. There’s too much money on the table for Spence not to make the fight with Crawford next year.

The only way that we might not see Spence vs. Crawford happen in 2021 is if one of them loses. Spence has a better chance of getting beaten because he’s facing the more dangerous guys like Shawn Porter. Arum says he wants to match Crawford against Porter, but thus far, he hasn’t done it.

“I don’t care about the ‘other side of the fence. This is the world of boxing,” said Bradley in letting fans know that the PBC vs. Top Rank issues shouldn’t keep the Crawford vs. Spence fight from taking place.

Bradley wasn’t fighting PBC fighters

When Bradley was with Top Rank, he wasn’t fighting the Premier Boxing Champions fighters. They had Bradley facing Manny Pacquiao three times and facing a lot of other Top Rank fighters. It’s interesting now that Bradley is retired, he’s pointing fingers at the PBC fighters for not fighting Crawford.

Bradley wasn’t crossing the street to fight PBC fighters when he was with Top Rank, so it doesn’t make sense for him to be pushing Spence to face Crawford. Some boxing fans wonder why Bradley never fought Spence and Crawford himself during his career. Bradley would have fought them both but he didn’t. Does that make Bradley a hypocrite?
