By Charles Brun: Promoter Frank Warren says that Tyson Fury has a contractual obligation to fight Deontay Wilder next, and we’re not going to see him face Anthony Joshua yet.
What Warren was hoping was that the Fury vs. Wilder trilogy match would take place in July. And if Fury won that fight, he would then move forward to face Joshua in November or December.
That’s not possible now. Wilder and Fury still don’t have a scheduled date, but it’s believed that they could fight in October. Given the situation with the pandemic, it could potentially delay the Fury vs. Wilder 3 fight from taking place.
Joshua still doesn’t have a date for his title defense against Kubrat Pulev, and that fight could be in the same situation as the Fury-Wilder match.
Fury and Wilder have contractual obligations
“No, we have a contract where both parties are contracted for that to take place. That’s where we are at the moment,” said Warren to BT Sport Boxing when asked if the Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury fight can go ahead of the Fury-Wilder 3 bout.
“What I was hoping is the July rematch, and I expected Tyson to win that. Who knows? If there was a miracle on Deontay Wilder’s part, and then I expected Tyson to fight AJ in November or December. That’s what our perfect world was until this nightmare descended on upon everybody,” said Warren.
“I want to get everything back in track. A lot of these guys are suffering like the general public is suffering,” said Warren.
Boxing fans don’t want to wait to see Joshua and Fury fight, but it looks like they’re going to have to. If the sport doesn’t start back up until later this year or in 2021, then we could be waiting until the second half of 2021 before Joshua and Fury meet.
Wilder isn’t going to back off and let Joshua and Fury fight for the good of the sport. Pulev isn’t going to that either. In a news release sent out yesterday, Pulev made it clear he wants his mandated title shot against Joshua.
Staging that fight behind closed doors would be an option if there was a way to get medical staff. With so many people sick right now, it would be a bad look if doctors and medical attendants were to work a fight.
Fury’s knockout over Wilder surprised Shakur
“I was a little bit surprised at the way he won,” said Shakur Stevenson to Fighthype on Fury’s stoppage win over Wilder. “I knew he [Fury] was going to win. And I didn’t expect him to walk in there and step to Deontay Wilder the way he did. I knew he’d been in the ring with him before.
“Usually, in rematches, the better boxer usually will win. He switched it up and stepped to him. He wasn’t afraid of Deontay’s power. And he did something in proving him on the pound-for-pound list, and one of the best heavyweights of all time. All that stuff. I got a lot of respect for Tyson Fury as a fighter,” said Stevenson.
Fury came with a better game plan than Wilder, and his weight was too much. He weighed in at 273 lbs, and he used his size to rough Wilder up and dominated.
Stevenson doubts Wilder beats Fury in third fight
“I like Wilder, but it’s hard to see him adjusting to Tyson Fury. Wilder isn’t a skillful type of guy to move around for every single round to try and knock out a guy. I think AJ will surprise everybody about ho he fights Tyson Fury. And I don’t think he’d get super blown out, but I think he’d lose. I don’t think he’d go in there to stop,” said Stevenson of Fury. “I think he’d outbox Joshua.
“Yeah, by far,” said Shakur when asked if Fury is the heavyweight in the division. “He posted a picture yesterday where he said all the other heavyweights don’t have Os. He’s right.”
Without drastic changes, Wilder will likely lose to Fury in the third fight. You can’t count Wilder out due to his punching power, though. If he lands one of his right hands on the chin of Fury, he’s got a chance of winning.
