By Jim Maltzman: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder was outweighed by 42 pounds on Friday at the weigh-in with Tyson Fury for their rematch this Saturday night. Wilder (42-0-1, 41 KOs) weighed in at a career-high of 231 lbs and looked considerably heavier than the 212 lbs he weighed for his first fight against Fury in December 2018. Wilder looked in better shape than Fury today, but that was expected.

There wasn’t a face-off between Wilder and Fury due to the Nevada State Athletic Commission banning it because of the pushing and shoving that occurred between the two fighters last Wednesday at the final news conference.

Deontay loudly booed by the crowd

Wilder was heavily booed by the fans despite him being the U.S fighter and Fury being from the UK. It’s possible that a lot of Fury’s loyal British fans made the long flight over to Las Vegas in order to see him live.

Fury weighed in at 273 lbs, which is 17 lbs heavier than the 256 lbs that he weighed the last time he battled Wilder. What’s interesting is that Fury chose not to take off his shirt during the weigh-in today. In Fury’s last fight against Otto Wallin, he weighed 254 lbs.

The 273 that Fury weighed on Friday was the third-highest total of his career. Fury’s highest totals are as follows:

  • 276 – Sefer Seferi
  • 274 – Joey Abell

Fury fought well in both of those fights in scoring knockouts, but he was facing weak opposition. We’re going to find out if Fury can fight at a high level with that kind of weight when he gets inside the ring with Wilder.

Perhaps Fury was self-conscious about still being a little chubby around his midsection. He’s never going to have an Anthony Joshua level physique, so it doesn’t matter how hard he works. The weight sticks to Fury’s midsection for some reason.

“273 from Fury. He kept his promise. Deontay Wilder 231. He kept his promise,” said Tim Bradley to ESPN after the weigh-in. “It’s going to be a war. I don’t think these guys are looking to go 12 rounds, especially carrying around that much weight. Tyson Fury, I’m used to him being big.

“He was actually a little bit bigger when he fought against Schwarz, and when he fought against Schwartz, he looked good and he had punching power to get him up out of there. And then he came in against Otto Wallin, and he looked a little bit off to me. He was a little light, and his punches weren’t as hard, as I saw in the Schwarz fight.
