By Aragon Garcia: After a 2019 in which he shocked the world in beating Anthony Joshua, Andy Ruiz Jr. will soon be back in the gym to begin training for his next fight in May or June, according to ESPN MX.
He’ll start training in February or May for his next bout. Tyson Fury says he’ll help Ruiz Jr. get his titles back by training with him in Las Vegas. That’s a kind offer from Fury, because he doesn’t have to do this. He wants to help Ruiz get his titles back from Joshua.
Ruiz is currently on a well deserved vacation with his family, but when he gets back, he’s expected to start training for his next fight. Andy fought three times in 2019, winning two of his matches. Although Ruiz didn’t finish the year strong in losing to Joshua in a rematch, he knows what he needs to work on.
Ruiz Jr. has options for ring return
The former three-belt heavyweight champion Ruiz Jr. (33-2, 22 KOs) has a number of options available to him, one of them being a seven-figure offer from Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn to fight Dillian Whyte. If Ruiz agrees to the offer to fight Whyte, he’ll need to start training in February.
Hearn wants the fight with Ruiz Jr. and Whyte to take place on March 28 or in April in the UK. The request to have Whyte come to the UK to face Whyte may be a non-starter, however. Ruiz is with Premier Boxing Champions, and they’re not likely to want to put their fighter at such a huge disadvantage before the first punch is thrown in that fight.
It’s not that Ruiz isn’t capable of fighting at a high level on the road. It’s more of a case of past history. Whyte’s matches against Oscar Rivas, Joseph Parker and Dereck Chisora all involved controversial elements to them that arguably impacted the results.
Ruiz beat Joshua by a 7th round knockout last June at Madison Square Garden in New York. In the December 7th rematch, Ruiz came in looking heavy, and wasn’t able to cut off the ring, and throw combinations like he’d done in the first. Joshua wasn’t going to stand and fight Ruiz this time, and his conditioning wasn’t what it needed to be for him to win.
Tyson Fury invites Andy Ruiz Jr. to train with him in Vegas
On Monday, lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury invited Ruiz to come to Las Vegas, Nevada to train with him to help him.
“I would advise Andy Ruiz to come to Las Vegas to train with me, and I’ll get his titles back,” said Fury to the boxing media. “Yeah, I’ve been there and done it before. I’ve been in the same position. You win some, you lose some.
‘You go out, and party, and then come home. The main thing you realize is boxing is the more important thing to you in your life. Boxing put you in the position that you’re in, and boxing gave you all those nice treasures,” said Fury in talking about Ruiz.
