Gervonta Davis talks Josh Taylor and Yuriorkis Gamboa fights

By Scott Gilfoid: Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (22-0, 21 KOs) reminded the media on Tuesday that he’s serious about wanting to move up to 140 to challenge IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Josh Taylor (16-0, 12 KOs) for his titles. Tank Davis says he’s probably “STOP” the undefeated Taylor in the later rounds of the contest.

Davis, 25, wasn’t taken seriously by Taylor and a lot of boxing fans when he said recently that wanted to move to 140 and defeat the Scottish fighter, but he’s serious about wanting to do that.

Gervonta Davis SERIOUS about Josh Taylor fight

“I was serious. I’ll face him,” said Davis about Josh Taylor. “I’d probably stop him in the late rounds. I believe so. People don’t see that I really have skills. It ain’t just power. I got skills,” said Davis.

So there it is. Tank Davis says he’ll “STOP” Taylor, and take his two titles away from him. Taylor defeated WBA 140-lb champion Regis Prograis (24-1, 20 KOs) by a close 12 round majority decision last month on October 26 in the final of the World Boxing Super Series tournament at the O2 Arena in London, England.

Like many fans, Prograis thinks he should have been given the division, but he realizes he was fighting Taylor in the UK. The American Prograis wasn’t going to be given any breaks when it came to the scoring.

Gervonta would be avenging fellow American Prograis’ defeat by taking on Taylor, and bringing back his WBA title to the U.S.

Taylor hasn’t seemed eager to want to fight Tank Davis for some reason? Why is that? Is he worried about the threat Davis presents to him? Could be.

Tank Davis faces Yuriorkis Gamboa on December 28

Gervonta is fighting next month on December 28 against former WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (30-2, 18 KOs) LIVE on Showtime at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Davis will be making his debut at 135 after having captured 2 titles [IBF & WBA] at super featherweight. The WBA ‘regular’ lightweight strap will be on the line or the Davis vs. Gamboa fight.

“I know he can fight. He ain’t no chump,” said Davis about Gamboa. “I’m prepared. 2020 for sure,” said Davis when asked if he’ll be doing PPV soon. “I just moved up to 135. We just want to see how I feel at 135. Even if I got to go back to 130, I can do that. I can stay at 135. Whatever me and my team come up with. I’m a team player.”

This is going to be a tough fight for Davis, as Gamboa is still one of the best fighters in boxing. Granted, Gamboa is up there in age at 37, and is fighting 2 weight classes above the division he started his career at, but he’s still an extraordinary fighter. This should be an exciting contest from start to finish.

If Gervonta wins this fight, he’ll be looking for big fights in 2020 against Josh Taylor and Devin Haney. In other words, the big names.
