The 32-year-old former WBA 135-lb champion Crolla used a body attack to get the better of Spain’s Urquiaga in controlling the last six rounds of the contest.

Crolla’s body attack was key to victory

The judges’ scores were 98-92, 97-93 for Crolla and 95-95. Boxing News 24 scored it for Crolla 98-92. He was too good for the 32-year-old Urquiaga. Rounds 2, 3 and 4 were close, but Crolla pulled away with it in dominating from the 5th round on. Crolla’s body shots were key in him controlling the action, and not letting Urquiaga get into his rhythm the way he wanted to.

The way that Crolla fought, he still has a little left in the tank for fights at the domestic level. Crolla went a lot further than what many boxing fans expected him to. He captured the WBA lightweight title in stopping Darleys Perez in the 5th round in November 2015, and then successfully defended it once in beating the hard hitting Ismael Barroso by a 7th round knockout in May 2016.

Crolla accomplished a lot in his career

In Crolla’s next fight, he lost his WBA title to the highly skilled Jorge Linares by a 12 round unanimous decision in September 2016. In their rematch in March 2017, Linares once again defeated Crolla by a 12 round unanimous decision. This time it was more one-sided fight with Linares winning by the scores 118-109, 118-109 and 118-109.

Crolla bounced back from that defeat to win his next three fights against Ricky Burns, Edson Ramirez and Daud Yordan. However, last April, Vasiliy Lomachenko destroyed Crolla in four rounds in a complete slaughter. More than anything, that fight took the steam out of Crolla’s boxing career, and likely convinced him that it he should consider retirement.

These are Crolla’s best career wins:

  • Ricky Burns
  • Darleys Perez
  • Ismael Barroso
  • Stephen Foster
  • John Murray
  • Gavin Rees
  • Willie Limond
  • John Watson
  • Andy Morris
  • Michael Brodie

Crolla had a world of problems in his defeats to Lomachenko, Linares, Derry Mathews [x 2] and Gary Sykes [x 2].
