By Kenneth Friedman: Former junior middleweight title challenger Erickson ‘The Hammer’ Lubin (21-1, 16 KOs) weighed in at 153 1/2 pounds for his scheduled 12 round fight against Nathaniel Gallimore (21-3-1, 17 KOs) on Saturday night at the Santander Arena in Reading, Pa. Gallimore weighed in at 152 3/4 pound and looked good. At 5’11”, Gallimore has the height advantage over the 5’9 1/2″ Lubin.

This is an important fight for Lubin, as he’s attempting to put himself in position to fight for a world title against WBC junior middleweight champion Tony Harrison.

Erickson Lubin looking to win his fourth straight fight

Lubin, 24, is looking to win his fourth straight fight since losing to former WBC junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo by a 1st round knockout two years ago in October 2017. Lubin made the mistake of ducking low in front of Charlo in the first round.

Charlo then nailed him with a chopping right hand to the head that flattened him. Lubin was too hurt to get back to his feet, and the fight was stopped right away. Since that loss, Lubin has won three in a row in beating these fighters:

  • Zakaria Attou
  • Ishe Smith
  • Silverio Ortiz

Lubin has a lot of talent, but he needs more experience before he challenges for a title. Two years ago, Lubin wasn’t ready to fight the aggressive Charlo, and he paid for it. Although Lubin has gotten a little more seasoning in his last three fights, he might not be ready for the big time. It’ll depend on how he performs against Gallimore on Saturday night.

Other weights on Lubin vs. Gallimore card:

Former IBF lightweight champion Robert Easter Jr. (21-1-1, 14 KOs) weighed in at 140 1/2 pounds for his 10 round fight at light welterweight champion Adrian ‘Tigre’ Granados (20-7-2, 14 KOs) in the co-feature bout on the card.

Granados is a tough foe for Easter Jr. to be fighting in his first fight at light welterweight. It doesn’t matter that Granados, 30, isn’t a world championship level fighter, he’s still plenty tough. Granados has only lost against quality fighters during his 11-year pro career.

In February 2017, Granados lost a highly questionable 10 round split decision to Adrien ‘The Problem’ Broner in Cincinnati, Ohio. A lot of boxing fans had Granados winning that fight. However, Broner was fighting in his hometown of Cincinnati, that made it tough for Granados to win.

In Granados’ other career defeats, he’s lost to these fighters:

  • Shawn Porter
  • Danny Garcia
  • Brad Solomon
  • Felix Diaz
  • Frankie Gomez

Easter, 28, has come up empty in his last two fights against Rances Barthelemy and Mikey Garcia. The fight against Barthelemy was scored a 12 round draw last April. Before that, the 5’11” Easter lost a 12 round unanimous decision to Mikey in July of 2018. Mikey had too much punching power for the rail think Easter Jr.

Whether Easter’s move up in weight will result in more punching power for him remains to be seen. Easter Jr. will need more power if he’s going to campaign at 140, because he can’t beat guys like Regis Prograis by focusing on volume punching.

Frank Sanchez vs. Jack Mulowayi – weights

Heavyweight prospect Frank Sanchez Faure (13-0, 11 KOs) weighed in at 223 pounds for his 10 round bout against Jack Mulowayi (7-1-1, 3 KOs). For his part, Mulowayi weighed in at 236 pounds. The 6’4″ Faure was an outstanding Cuban amateur in the past.
