Errol Spence could face Danny Garcia next

By Dean Berman: Errol Spence Jr. got Shawn Porter out of the way last Saturday night in edging him by a 12 round split decision in their unification fight, and he could be facing Danny Garcia next. Although Porter (30-3-1, 17 KOs) asked for a rematch after the fight, former two division world champion Garcia (35-2, 21 KOs) could be Spence’s next opponent.

IBF welterweight champion Spence defeated Porter by a 12 round unanimous decision on PBC on FOX Sports at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The results were controversial though, as a lot of boxing fans think Porter deserved to get the win. The judges scored it 116-111, 116-111 for Spence, and 115-112 for Porter.

Danny Garcia calls out Spence after the fight

Garcia, 30, came into the ring moments after the fight last night, and called out Spence, saying:

“It was a top dog fight tonight,” said Garcia. “I want you next Errol. It was a tough rugged fight. Shawn Porter is a tough fighter. I’m here to say I want next.”

The fact that Danny was allowed to come inside the ring after the Spence-Porter fight is a strong indication that Spence’s promoters/management want that fight to take place next.

Spence didn’t confirm that Danny will be the next guy he faces, however. They were talking about Errol (26-0, 21 KOs) moving up to the 154-pound division to take on IBF/WBA junior middleweight champion Julian ‘J-Rock’ Williams (27-1-1, 16 KOs) for his two titles.

Heidi Androl from FOX says she was told Danny Garcia is Spence’s next opponent

Fox Sports TV reporter Heidi Androl interviewed Danny Garcia inside the ring last Saturday, and she says she was TOLD by those “at the top” that Spence WILL be fighting Danny in his next fight. If she was told that Garcia will be Spence’s next opponent, then there’s a good chance that’s who he’ll fight rather than facing ‘J-Rock’ Williams, who isn’t as well known as Danny Garcia.

Here’s what Heidi Androl said on social media about why she interviewed Danny Garcia inside the ring:

“For those who think I set that up, it came from the top,” said @HeidiAndrolAndro. “Derrick James had told me they liked the idea of a @JRockboxing fight at 154 on Thursday. On fight night, I was instructed that Danny Garcia would be next. I was told before the fight – without question, Danny Garcia will be Errol Spence’s next opponent.”

Spence vs. Danny Garcia = excellent fight

A lot of casual boxing fans would love to see Spence face Danny Garcia in his next fight rather than a rematch with Porter or a fight with Julian Williams. While it’s certainly true that Garcia has suffered losses to Porter and Keith Thurman in the last two years, he remains a big name in the welterweight division.

With Garcia’s powerful left hook, he would be a threat to Spence, especially if he looks the way he did against Porter. Garcia’s left hook is a game changer, and it doesn’t matter if he gets out-boxed for the majority of the fight. If Danny lands that left hook on the button, he’ll knockout Spence.

Danny Garcia: Spence fight is “in the talks”

“It would be another action-packed fight,” said Garcia to Fighthype when asked after the fight his thoughts about fighting Spence. “He likes to fight, and like to fight. What makes this fight interesting is he’s never fought a person that can hit as hard as me, and he likes to stay there. That’s why I like this fight so much for me. Oh yeah, that’s why I went into the ring. I wouldn’t go in there for no reason. I want this fight because I believe I can win this fight.

“It’s in the talks. It could happen next,” said Garcia when asked if he was told that Spence will be next. It can definitely happen next, but in boxing anything can happen. Definitely, he’s there to be hit. But as I said before, he was kind of disrespectful. No one gave Shawn Porter a chance. I told people, ‘The kid doesn’t look like he knows what he’s doing, but he knows what he’s doing.’ It was close fight that could have gone either way,” said Danny.

Danny Garcia says Spence is “definitely beatable”

“It was the same fight, but he [Spence] got the knockdown,” said Garcia in comparing Spence’s fight with Porter last night to his match against Shawn last year in September. Garcia lost to Porter by a close 12 round unanimous decision. “He [Porter] backed him up a lot. He didn’t back me up that much. That was more of a tough-tough, rugged fight. I’m more tactical, so it’s hard to make me look like that. He threw a lot on the inside, but that was a close fight. Nah, he can fight. I don’t take nothing away from him, but he’s definitely beatable,” said Garcia.

Spence did look beatable against Porter, but Danny Garcia might not have the talent to do the job on him.
