By Barry Holbrook: Former WBA light middleweight champion Austin Trout (31-5-1, 17 KOs) fought to a disappointing 10 round draw against fringe contender Terrell Gausha (21-1-1, 10 KOs) on Saturday night on Premier Boxing Champions on FS1 at the Beau Rivage Resort Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.

The judges scores were 99-91 for Gausha, 96-94 for Trout, and 95-95. Boxing News 24 had Trout, 33, edging it by a 96-94 score. Trout fought better in the first half of the contest. He ran out of gas somewhat in the second half of the fight, allowing Gausha to creep back into it. However, Trout still appeared to do enough to squeak out a win by winning one or two of the last five rounds.

There’s no word yet about a rematch for the Trout vs. Gausha. This fight was so bad that it would be better off for the boxing public if these two don’t face each other a second time. Trout needed this win to put him in position for a world title shot against the winner of the Tony Harrison vs. Jermell Charlo 2 rematch. Trout will need to keep working for him to get a crack at a world title. Trout came into the fight having been recently beaten by Jermell Charlo by a 12 round majority decision last year in June. Despite the fight being close, Trout chose to take 11 months off before coming back tonight to fight Gausha.

Mistake #1 for Trout was to take a year off after a close loss to Charlo. Mistake #2 for Trout was to take a tough fight against Gausha after being out of the ring for an extended amount of time. In hindsight, Trout should have taken one or two tune-up fights before facing Gausha. Trout didn’t handle this well. A good promoter would have made sure Trout got back into the ring within four to six months after his loss to Charlo. If they did allow Trout to be out of the ring for such a long period of time, they would have made sure he took at least one good tune-up before letting him fight a guy like Gausha.

Ahmed Elbiali vs. Marlos Simões

Light heavyweight slugger Ahmed Elbiali (19-1, 16 KOs) defeated an over-matched Marlos Simões (13-2-2, 5 KOs) by a second round knockout. Simões suffered a jaw injury after taking a right hand to the head that put him down. Referee Keith Hughes then stopped the contest. The official time of the stoppage was at 1:12 of round two. The victory for the 28-year-old Elbiali was his third straight since losing to Jean Pascal by a sixth round knockout in December 2017. Elbiali has been facing nothing but soft opposition since his loss to Pascal. His victories have come against Zoltan Sera, 39-year-old Allan Green and Simoes.

Efe Apochi vs. Earl Newman

Undefeated cruiserweight Efe Apochi (8-0, 8 KOs) stopped Earl Newman (10-2-1, 7 KOs) in the seventh round. Apochi stopped Newman with a right to the head. The fight was halted by the referee at 2:12.
