Gurguliani Dominates Valavanis, Wins WBF World Title

It was nothing short of a real life Rocky Story on Friday night in Cairo, Egypt, when late substitute Lasha Gurguliani stepped in to face local hero Andreas Valavanis for the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) World Super Welterweight title.

A genuine road-warrior. Gurguliani (28) has continuously taken short notice assignments all over the world, fighting in Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Latvia, Belgium, Italy, Hungary, Germany and Russia with mixed results, besides his native Georgia.

Despite beating Nuhu Lawal (25-3) in Germany and Arif Magomedov (18-2) in Russia in two of his previous three outings, Gurguliani travelled to Egypt as the underdog, a natural consequence of accepting the fight not much more than a week ago.

But the visitor proved his actual class by thoroughly dominating Valavanis, scoring six knock-downs along the way to secure a unanimous decision despite being knocked down once himself, and having two points deducted for fouls. Valavanis had one point deducted for a foul.

Judge Eddie Marshal from South Africa scored the fight 116-103, while judges Adesanya Olusegun Ayodele from Nigeria and Emmanuel Mlundwa from Tanzania had it much too close at 110-107 and 110-109 respectively.

The new WBF World Champion improved his professional record to 18-6 (6), while former WBF All Africa, International and Intercontinental titlist Valavanis drops to 13-2 (11). Still only twenty-seven years old, the Egyptian showed tremendous courage to last the distance and has time to improve and come again.

Promoter of the fight was Richard Nwoba and Louaa Boxing Promotions.

Tingen WBF Intercontinental Champ, Brown Wins International

Undefeated Dutch Champion Ben Tingen added the World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental Cruiserweight title to his resume on Saturday night, May 25, at De Bonte Wever in Assen, Netherlands, beating Bosnian Ervin Dzinic.

The fight was evenly contested and action-packed as long as it lasted, with both men landing hurtful punches, but when Tingen connected with a body-shot followed up by a right hand to the head and a left hook to the shoulder, Dzinic went down in agony.

Claiming injury to the shoulder, Dzinic was unable to continue, forcing referee Mafudel Elghazaoui to count him out and wave the fight off at 0:58 of the fourth round to declare Tingen the new champion with a record of 10-0-1 (8). Dzinic falls to 7-3 (2).

At the Big Punch Arena in Tijuana, Mexico, also on Saturday night, American Donald Brown captured the vacant WBF International Super Featherweight title with a landslide unanimous decision over local man Juan Carlos Armenta.

Brown (26) found his rhythm early in the fight and never allowed the younger, less seasoned, Armenta into the fight. No knock-downs along the way, but Brown was in full control and cruised to win every round on all judges scorecards: 100-90 x 3.

From Inglewood in California but fighting in Tijuana for the fifth straight time, Brown takes his unblemished record to 7-0 (5) as he picks up his first title after less than eight months in the paid ranks. Armenta drops to 4-2-1 (4).
