Tony Harrison vs. Jermell Charlo 2 on June 23 in LA or Vegas

Latest Harrison vs. Charlo 2 Jermall Charlo Jermell Charlo Tony Harrison

By Barry Holbrook: The rematch between WBC junior middleweight champion Tony Harrison (28-2, 21 KOs) and former WBC 154 lb champion Jermell Charlo (31-1, 15 KOs) will be taking place on June 23 on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox in either Los Angeles, California of Las Vegas, Nevada, according to Mike Coppinger.

There had been talk of the Harrison vs. Charlo II fight taking place in Jermell’s hometown of Houston, Texas, but that’s not happening. Harrison, the World Boxing Council junior middleweight champion, not surprisingly, didn’t want to have to defend his title in front of a large group of Charlo’s fans.

Harrison got the better of Jermell with his jab, and pinpoint shots. Charlo, 28, seemed to be focusing on loading up on a big knockout shot the entire fight. Instead of fighting intelligently, Charlo was swinging for the fences and getting picked apart. Charlo didn’t used to fight like that, but his recent string of knockout victories seems to have him believing he’s a knockout puncher. He’s not. Charlo’s bigger twin brother Jermall Charlo is the knockout puncher of the two. Jermell will never be that type of puncher. If he makes the mistake of fighting the same way he did in the first fight against Harrison, he’ll lose to him again.

Jermell’s brother interim WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (28-0, 21 KOs) will be fighting less than a week after him against Brandon Adams (21-2, 13 KOs) on June 29 on Showtime World Championship Boxing. That fight is expected to take place in Houston. Obviously, Adams, 29, isn’t in the position to dictate where his fight with Charlo takes place. Adams is the B-side of the equation. If he were to make too much fuss about where the fight takes place, he likely wouldn’t get the fight. Adams was recently mentioned as a possibility for former IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s June 8 fight on DAZN. Adams had offers from GGG and Jermall, but he opted to go with the later for some reason.

Adams sparred with Golovkin in the past, and is said to have been impressed with his punching power. Adams knows what he would be getting if he fought GGG. At least with Charlo, he might stand a better chance, because he looked really bad in his last fight against Russian southpaw Matt Korobov on December 22. Charlo won the fight by a controversial 12 round unanimous decision at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. However, the boxing public and many in the media saw Korobov as the better fighter.

Charlo looked confused the entire night, and unable to stop the left hands that Korovbov was hitting him with repeatedly. Given how controversial decision was, Charlo arguably should have offered Korobov a rematch. The fact that he isn’t giving the Russian a rematch suggests that he’s happen with his questionable decision, and doesn’t want any part of mixing it up with him a second time.
