By Jim Dower: IBF super middleweight champion Jose Uzcategui (28-2, 23 KOs) weighed in successfully in coming in at 165.2 pounds on Saturday for his title defense against unbeaten Caleb Plant (17-0, 10 KOs) this Sunday, January 13 on Premier IBF mandatory Boxing Champions on FS1 and FOX Deportes at the Microsoft Theatre at L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California. Plant, 26, weighed in slightly higher at 166.8 pounds. This is going to be a good fight to see if Plant is as good as some boxing fans think he is. Plant hasn’t been tested during his career as of yet. After Sunday, we’ll know if he’s the real thing.

This will be the first title defense for the 28-year-old Uzcategui, and it’ll be his first real test since his 8th round stoppage win over Andre Dirrell last year in March. Uzcategui picked up the interim International Boxing Federation 168 lb title with the victory over Dirrell. The Venezuelan Uzcategui later would elevated to the full IBF champion last July by the sanctioning body.

In other weights on the card, former WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (17-1, 11 KOs) weighed in at 122.2 pounds for his 10 round scheduled fight against journeyman opponent Giovanni Delgado (16-8, 9 KOs). For his part, the 27-year-old Delgado weighed in at 128.6 lbs. As you can see there’s a fairly wide gap in weight between the two fighters. As long as DelGado doesn’t rehydrate too much, the 2-time Olympic gold medalist Rigondeaux should be fine. This is not supposed to be a competitive fight. however. The 38-year-old Rigondeaux is taking a tune-up fight after being out of the ring for 13 months following his sixth round stoppage loss to former WBO 130 pound champion Vasyl Lomachenko in December 2017. The Cuban Rigondeaux has been sitting idle ever since that loss. Some boxing fans believe that Rigondeaux has been in hiding out of shame from the way he was dominated and stopped by the 2-time Olympic gold medalist Lomachenko in December 2017. That fight was supposed to have been a competitive one, but it turned out badly for Rigondeaux. He just wasn’t big enough.

Super bantamweight contender Brandon Figueroa (17-0, 12 KOs) weighed in at 121.4 pounds for his 12 round fight against former world title challenger Moises Flores (25-1, 17 KOs). Flores has looked poor lately in his last two fights against Daniel Roman and Guillermo Rigondeaux. Flores lost to Roman by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision last June. Before that, Flores was beaten by Rigondeaux by a 1st round knockout in June 2017. Luckily for Flores, the Nevada State Athletic Commission ruled it a disqualification due to Rigondeaux landing a couple of punches after the bell had sounded to end the 1st round. Flores went down hard, and didn’t get up. The referee initially ruled it as a knockout win for Rigondeaux. However, the Nevada Commission overruled the referee in changing the result to a 1st round no contest. It appeared to some boxing fans that Flores faked like he was knocked out so that he could get a disqualification victory. It didn’t workout though, as the NSAC eventually changed the result to a no contest.

Light heavyweight prospect Ahmed Elbiali (17-1, 14 KOs) weighed in at 175 pounds against 39-year-old former world title challenger Allan Green (33-5, 22 KOs). Green weighed 178.6 lbs. This is an interesting fight to see whether Elbiali, 28, has the talent to beat an older guy, that at one time was one of the top fighters at 168 a decade ago. If Elbiali loses this one, he might want to consider hanging up his gloves. He was beaten by Jean Pascal by a 6th round knockout in December of 2017. Since then, Elbiali has fought just once in beating journeyman Zoltan Sera by a third round knockout last June. Elbiali is supposed to beat Green, but then again he was also expected to beat Pascal, and that one didn’t turn out too well for him. Losing to Green would be a clear sign that Elbiali is not going to be able to raise his game enough for him to contend with the top fighters at 175.
