Derby’s unbeaten Welterweight prospect Ross Doherty appears in confident mood ahead of his first Championship contest, against Latvian Gvido Seilis this coming Saturday, the 29th September, on the Dan Gray promoted event at Pride Park in Derby.

Doherty has been mighty impressive, since bursting on to the professional scene, with a solid points victory over Belfast’s Marty Kayes back in September 2016, which he followed up with a series of solid points victories over the past two years, culminating in a sensational performance, and yet another shutout points victory, against another tough Latvian, Grigorijs Dunecs, in an eight rounder back in April this year.

It was this particular performance against Dunecs that led promoter Dan Gray to decide it was time for his charge Doherty to step up and challenge for Championship honours, as such on Saturday night, Doherty and his opponent Seilis are set to go toe-to-toe for both the World Boxing League (WBL) and European Boxing League (EBL) European Welterweight Championships.

Speaking earlier, Doherty said,

“I’m really looking forward to this fight,

“My training camp has gone very well, Dan Gray pushed me to my limits in training as well as arranged some seriously top class sparring for me.

“My opponent has changed, I don’t know too much about Gvido Seilis, other than he seems a very tough lad. Would normally have video footage of the opponents fights in plenty of time, which helps in us to adapt to the opponent’s style, however not the case this time, but we’re not worried, the camp was that good.

“We know we are up against it, but I’m feeling confident I’ve got what it takes to do what is needed to bring those title belts home.”

Ross Doherty versus Gvido Seilis for the World Boxing League (WBL) and European Boxing League (EBL) European Welterweight Championships, co-headlines with the Nathan Decastro versus Agoe Ashong, for the Professional Boxing Council (PBC) Commonwealth Super Middleweight Championship contest on the Daniel Gray promoted event at Pride Park in Derby on Saturday 29th September 2018.

Also featured on the event is another mouth-watering all Merseyside title clash, between Craig Kennerdale and Paul Peers for the Professional Boxing Council (PBC) Silver English Welterweight title.

There are also two non-championship contests featured on the event, exciting Super Bantamweight Emily Pugh makes her second pro outing against Latvia’s Veronika Sirajeva and Leed’s Super lightweight Jack Jones makes his professional debut against Dundalk, Ireland’s Michael Kelly.

The event is virtually sold out but there are a few tickets still available, for details please call Dan Gray on 07522 401454.

Title Heartbreak For Denny

Rowley Regis’ Tyler Denny suffered English title heartbreak on Saturday evening after a nasty facial injury put paid to his chances of earning national honours.

The 27 year-old suffered a first career defeat as his English Middleweight Title fight, sponsored by S&R Construction, with Reece Cartwright, at Walsall Town Hall, was waved off in the 8th round.

Denny had a deep gash to his lip, and a badly swollen eye, when referee Terry O’Connor sought the views of the ringside doctor for a second time midway through the eighth round. Rightly, the fight was waved off giving Leeds’ Cartwright the belt.

In truth, it was a deserved victory for Cartwright who boxed well behind an unorthodox jab and he would have surely been up on all three judges cards at the top of the stoppage.

Denny, the Midlands Area Champion, will come again no doubt but he faces a spell on the sidelines as he waits for his facial injuries to heal having received four stitches to his lip.

Wolverhampton debutant, Conah Walker, stole the show as far as the undercard to this BCB Promotions show was concerned.

The Ricky Hatton youngster blew away Jan Korec, securing a fourth round stoppage. Fellow debutant, Troi ‘The Hawk’ Coleman impressed against the teak-tough Louis Van Poetsch. The Burntwood boxer can be pleased with his first foray into the pro game having made the switch from the unlicensed scene.

Fellow Burntwood boxer, Dani Hodges, made it two wins on the bounce since switching from kickboxing as she overcame Poland’s Sonia Klos.

Walsall duo, James Beech Jr and Levi Ferguson, both cruised to victory over Simas Volosinas and Jordan Grannum respectively whilst Oldbury’s Ryan ‘Stewart’ Davis bounced back from a first career defeat to beat Jamie Quinn over six rounds.

BCB Promotions’ next show take splace in Stoke on Saturday, 20th October before they return to Walsall Town Hall on Saturday, 27th October. For more information, visit www.bcb-promotions.com.

Steve Brogan, 12-1-2 (2), tops the bill at the Liverpool Olympia on Saturday September 29, live on vipboxing.tv. The fighter from Skelmersdale will contest the vacant Central Area Lightweight Title against late replacement Brad ‘Beefy’ Botham, 5-5-1 (1), after the withdrawal of original opponent, Shakeeb Ali.

Despite the change, Brogan says he isn’t fazed. The 34-year-old recently chatted to VIP TV and explained how – if victorious – he is hoping the belt will be the springboard onto bigger titles.

“He’s not a journeyman; he’s coming to win the title,” said Brogan. “I’ve seen a couple of his fights. He looks a good kid, comes forward and had been in a couple of Central Area Title fights before. So, he’s got the experience. He’s good, he fights in the pocket and I’m looking forward to it. I’m grateful to be topping the bill at The Olympia. It’s a proper fighting venue, and the undercard is great with loads of talent on.”

“There’s always a great atmosphere at the Olympia,” said promoter, Steve Wood. “This will be a good fight and, despite Botham getting the opportunity late, that could work in his favour because there’s no pressure on him. We’ve had Botham on our shows before and he will definitely give Steve a very good test. So, this headliner will make for good viewing for the fans, and we’ve got an entertaining undercard too featuring local fighters including Tom Farrell, and Luke Willis.”

VIP Promotions presents Skelmersdale’s Steve Brogan against Yorkshire’s Brad Botham for the vacant Central Area Lightweight Title at the Liverpool Olympia on September 29.

Appearing on the undercard will be Liverpool’s Luke Willis, Lloyd Campbell, Tom Farrell, Adam Farrell, Tom McGuinness and Marcel Braithwaite.

Tickets are priced at £30 (upper balcony), £35 (lower balcony), £40 (ground floor), and £60 (ringside) – please call 01942 874 241 or visit vipboxing.tv.
