By Sean Jones: Shane Mosley feels that Saul Canelo Alvarez is a clean fighter, and that his positive tests for his canceled rematch with Gennady Golovkin last May could have been a result of him eating bad meat or his trainer putting something in his food to give him an edge. Mosley doesn’t think Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) intentionally took anything to get an edge against Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs).

Mosley says he admires the 27-year-old Canelo’s boxing skills, and he feels he’s a great fighter, who doesn’t need PEDS for him to beat GGG. Unfortunately, Canelo’s two positive tests for clenbuterol speak for themselves. It doesn’t matter how the substance got in his body. The fact is Canelo tested positive twice for the banned substance. The Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Canelo for six months due to his positive tests. They didn’t care that he was blaming his positive tests on having eaten contaminated meat in Mexico.

”I don’t think he’s a full-fledged middleweight,” Mosley said to Fighthype. ”I think Triple G is a full-fledged middleweight, but he can probably go to 168. He’s a little bit stronger. Yeah, [Canelo weighed in at 167 pounds for the recent 30-day weigh-in this week], but that doesn’t make a different because the size is put on. When I fought at 154, I put on a whole bunch of weight, but it wasn’t my weight. I was really a 147 pounder. So naturally, Golovkin being 5’11”, 6’0” and Canelo being my height at 5’9”, I think he [GGG] has a bit of an advantage. It was kind of like when I fought Winky Wright. Winky had the advantage. He was a lot bigger with great defense, but he was a lot bigger,” Mosley said in explaining why Golovkin got the better of Canelo last time they fought,” Mosley said.

Canelo will likely be heavier than 167 when he steps inside the ring against Golovkin on September 15. Whether you want to say that Canelo is a true junior middleweight or not, his weight suggests that he’s no longer able to make the 154 pound division any longer. If Canelo wants to drain himself so that he can stay at 154, he can always try to do that if things don’t work out well for him on September 15 against GGG. I wouldn’t be surprised if Canelo does try and return to the 154 pound weight class if Golovkin obliterates him. At 5’8”, Canelo is short for the middleweight division. It’s his lack of height that is his real problem. Canelo was helpless when Golovkin was jabbing him from the outside last September. If not for the odd scoring by the judges giving Canelo rounds in which he was eating jabs from the outside, he would have lost the fight to GGG.

”I think things happen,” Mosley putting a spin on Canelo testing positive twice for clenbuterol last February. ”Maybe it was bad meat or his sport’s trainer put something in there to make him stronger, you know, and he didn’t know. I think training with Canelo, he’s a clean fighter. He’s very strong and fast. I don’t think in his mind he needs anything to beat GGG. He can do whatever, he’s supreme and he can do whatever he wants to do. He’s beaten a lot of great guys and he’s a great fighter. I like how Canelo fights. I love it,” Mosley said about Canelo.

Mosley doesn’t seem to be willing to entertain the idea that Canelo tested positive for clenbuterol because of intentional reasons. But since there’s no way of ever knowing how the clenbuterol got in Canelo’s system, one will never know for sure. All the fans know is Canelo tested positive twice for the substance, and that his physique just happened to look incredibly muscular and well-defined in his first fight with Golovkin.
