By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya has a message for Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin, letting him know that the May 5th fight between him and Saul Canelo Alvarez is STILL “going down” on the Cindo de Mayo weekend. Despite the investigation of Canelo still underway by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, De La Hoya waned to send Golovkin the warning message for what he can expect on May 5th.

De La Hoya says Canelo will be knocking Golovkin out. Of course, at this time we didn’t even know yet whether the Canelo-GGG rematch will be taking place, because the Commission hasn’t completed their full investigation for Canelo’s positive test for clenbuterol, a performance enhancing drug that he tested positive for on two occasions last month.

Canelo has reportedly tested negative three times for the drug in March, but that doesn’t solve the problem that he tested positive last month. The Commission still needs to get to the bottom of the problem and find out why Canelo tested positive. If it was due to beef contamination in Mexico, the Commission will likely want to know when and where Canelo purchased the beef.

“Triple G, Cinco de Mayo, it’s going down, and guess what? So are you,” Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya said.

Looking at Canelo’s training video, you must admit that he now looks like a full 160 lb. fighter. De La Hoya can no longer say that Canelo hasn’t grown into the middleweight division. He looks like a light heavyweight at this point in his career. As big as the 27-year-old Canelo is, the concern here would be how much longer will he be able to make the 160 lb. weight limit before he’s forced to move up to super middleweight?

Hopefully when that time comes, Canelo won’t be using catch-weights for three years like he did when he slowly eased up to middleweight by fighting at 155 lbs. from 2013 to 2015. It’ll be hard for super middleweights if they have to drain down to the low 160s to accommodate a catch-weight for Canelo.

The video showed Canelo working out on weights. He probably should stay off the weights, because his fame is too bulky, and he might have problems carrying all that weight around in the rematch. Goodness knows, Canelo was gassed out two-thirds of the fight against Golovkin last September.

If Canelo had come in lighter for the fight, his stamina might have been better, because his heart wouldn’t have been put under such a heavy work load of carrying around all that bulk that he’d packed on during training camp. Canelo looked like he added 15 to 20 lbs. of size from his previous fight. If Canelo wants to do something different for the rematch, he should take off weight rather than packing it on again or maintaining the bulk that he put on for the previous GGG fight.
