By Scott Gilfoid: Chris Eubank Jr. is hoping he can beat George Groves this Saturday, and then defeat the winner of the Callum Smith vs. Juergen Braehmer fight to capture the World Boxing Super Series trophy. Eubank Jr. (26-1, 20 KOs) says that if he wins the WBSS tournament, it’ll separate from his famous father former 2 division world champion Chris Eubank (45-5-2, 23 Kos).

I’m not sure that it will. At the same point in his career as Eubank Jr. is now, Eubank had already beaten Nigel Benn and Michael Watson. Eubank Jr. will have only beaten Groves and the Braemer vs. Smith winner of he captures the WBSS. I’m afraid it’s going to take more than winning the WBSS tournament for Eubank Jr. to outdo his famous father.

Eubank Jr. might need to add to his resume by showing that he can beat the winner of the Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin vs. Saul Canelo Alvarez rematch, as well as beat David Benavidez and Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez. If Eubank Jr. can beat all those fighters, then maybe he’ll have done enough for him to be recognized as being on par with his dad. I don’t think Eubank Jr. beats his father if the two had fought each other when his father was in his prime. Eubank was a more rugged fighter with better power, and more capable of going to war and winning. Eubank Jr. is more of a volume puncher with moderate power. He doesn’t possess the punching power that his dad had.

“I don’t think my father will ever have absolutely nothing to do with me, in terms of boxing,” Eubank Jr. said to skysports.com. “I’ve come to terms that people will always compare us. But this is the type of fight that really does separate me from my father. Winning this fight, winning the tournament, puts me in a league of my own.”

The problem Eubank Jr. has is the WBSS tournament doesn’t have all the best fighters in the division. If Eubank Jr. wins the tournament, he’ll only prove that he’s better than George Groves, Callum Smith and Braehmer. Those are flawed fighters. Groves has been beaten several times in his career already. Smith doesn’t look special. Braehmer is 39-years-old and almost done. Eubank Jr. needs a win over someone like Golovkin or Canelo for him to outdo his father. Eubank Jr. already passed up on a fight with Golovkin in 2016. Would Eubank Jr. be willing to fight Golovkin finally or would he draw his feet like he did in 2016 when the fight was offered to him.

For me, I rate Eubank as the better fighter than Eubank Jr. I don’t think he’ll ever be as good as his dad. That’s the way it is sometimes. The son sometimes isn’t as good as the father. There’s nothing wrong with that. Eubank Jr. is still a good fighter. He’s just not as good as his dad. Eubank Jr. is a volume puncher, and he’ll get knocked out one of these days when he tries to fight like that against the wrong fighter. It might happen this Saturday. If Groves hits Eubank Jr. in the middle of one of his flurries, he’s going to go to sleep for a while. If Groves lands a body shot during one of Eubank Jr’s flurries, he’ll have him rolling around on the ground in pain. I don’t see it ending well for Eubank Jr. on Saturday if he fights the way he did against Avni Yildirim.
