By Jim Dower: 2-time Irish Olympian Michael Conlan (5-0, 4 KOs) boxed a beautiful fight in beating Fernando Molina (7-4-1, 2 KOs) in defeating him by a 6 round unanimous decision on Saturday night in front of a U.S audience at Madison Square Garden in New York. Conlan showed off some amazing skills in winning the fight by the scores 60-54, 60-54 and 60-54.

Conlan, 26, was never at risk by Molina. It was mostly one-way traffic with Conlan landing some blistering single shots to the head. Molina was a good opponent for Conlan to get some rounds in.
Starting in round 5, Conlan began to time Molina and nail him with uppercuts to the head. Molina took the shots well.

Molina caught Conlan with some nice right hands in the 2nd and 3rd round. Molina, 29, took advantage of Conlan fighting with his hands down.

The win for Conlan keeps him on course for an eventual match between 2016 U.S Olympic silver medalist Shakur Stevenson. Those 2 are on course for a showdown between them. Stevenson fought tonight and looked great in winning his fight.

Conlan was fighting with his hands down by his sides the entire fight. He looked like he was showboating much of the time. It was unnecessary for him to to that because he wasn’t facing a good enough opponent for him to try and show off like that. It would be better for Conlan to use these early fights to work on developing his skills for later on when he starts facing better opposition.

Conlan can’t fight with his hands down by his sides when he ups the level against the better fighters in the featherweight division. As big as Conlan was tonight, it’s unlikely that he’ll be able to stay at featherweight for any length of time. Conlan is clearly going to wind up at super featherweight in the near future.
