By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. says former IBF super featherweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis isn’t interested in the Top Rank promoted Vasyl Lomachenko right now. Mayweather says they’re main focus is to make money, and make the right fights. Davis isn’t interested in winning any world titles right now.

Lomachenko told Mayweather he wants him to stop hiding the 23-year-old Davis, as he wants to fight him. Mayweather advised Lomachenko to move up to lightweight and try challenging WBC champion Mikey Garcia. That comment from Mayweather was met with silence by Lomachenko, which is a pretty big hint that he’s not interested in facing Mikey.

“We’re not thinking about Lomachenko. He’s with Top Rank. Let him stay over there,” said Mayweather in letting Lomachenko and the boxing world know that he’s not interested in matching Davis (190, 18 KOs) against Lomachenko or any of the super flyweight champions right now. ”We wanna build that bank account, be smart, make the right moves. We’re not looking to unify the belts right now,” said Mayweather.

As Mayweather said, Lomachenko is with Top Rank, and he should “stay over there.” What that means is possibly a signal that Mayweather is not going to do business with Lomachenko while he’s with Top Rank. It’s surprising that Lomachenko bothered to even call Gervonta out in the first place, because it’s not as if Mayweather is in a habit of matching his fighters against Arum’s.

If Lomachenko ever leaves Top Rank at any time in the future, Mayweather might decide to make the fight between him and Davis. Lomachenko is about to turn 30 in February, and I’d be very surprised if he ever leaves Top Rank while he’s still in his prime. Once Lomachenko is an over-the-hill fighter, then anything is possible. But there won’t be any point for Davis to fight a shot Lomachenko. The fight would make sense only if Lomachenko is still fighting at an elevated level. But don’t expect it to get made while Lomachenko is still with Top Rank.

Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions had this to say about Davis, Lomachenko and Mayweather:

”We’re not looking to unify NOW. Geez, he had just won the title 5 months earlier.”

That sounds like a reasonable response from Mayweather to Lomachenko. They’re interested in fighting Lomachenko or any of the other champions at super featherweight right now. That could change in the near future, but for now they’re not interested in going in that direction.
Lomachenko needs to step up and face Mikey Garcia because he’s ready to fight him now.
