By Scott Gilfoid: David Price (21-4, 18 KOs) believes he’s only 3 wins away from the big fights against top guys like WBA heavyweight champion Manuel Charr or Tyson Fury. In the meantime, Price will be fighting this Saturday night against journeyman Kamil Sokolowski (4-11-2, 1 KOs) in a 6 round fight at the Brentwood Centre, Brentwood.

At this point in the 34-year-old Price’s career, every fight is a make or break one for him. Price absolutely cannot lose to the 31-year-old Sokolowski if he wants to keep his hopes alive for a title shot against Charr or a big money match against Tyson Fury.

Price also is interested in fighting Dave Allen. That’s not the fight that Price wants, but he realizes that he needs to start from the bottom by going the domestic level route before he can build on it to fight for a world title or to face Fury.

“I watched that fight and [Manuel] Charr’s done well. He’s come back from the brink really and if anything that’s proof that you can come back,” said Price to skysports.com.

The 33-yar-old Charr’s situation was unique. He was given an opportunity to fight Alexander Ustinov for the World Boxing Association’s secondary heavyweight title. The WBA was supposed to be reducing the amount of titles they have in each division, but they’re taking their time in doing that. The other WBA champion is Anthony Joshua, who holds the WBA Super World heavyweight title.

Charr is the WBA World heavyweight champion. It’s a real mess Had Charr faced Joshua for his upper level WBA strap, the odds of him winning that fight would be low. You can argue the odds of Charr making it out of round 1 against Joshua would be low as well. It would be a terrible mismatch if that fight ever took place. Price isn’t going to have the same situation as Charr was put in. If Price is going to win a heavyweight title, he’ll need to do it the hard way by trying to go through Joshua, Deontay Wilder or Joseph Parker.

“There is no reason why I couldn’t do something similar,” said Price in comparing his situation to that of Manuel Charr. It’s a fight I would love to have the opportunity to take.”

Price and Charr are around the same age, but their circumstances are different. Charr was given a once in a life opportunity to fight for the vacant WBA heavyweight title against Ustinov. Even then, Charr lucked out with the judges giving him a controversial decision. The fight took place in Germany, and that’s where Charr lives. Boxing News 24 scored the fight to Ustinov by 4 rounds. The scoring by the assigned judges for the Charr-Ustinov fight was quite favorable to Charr. They gave him rounds in which he appeared to get outworked.

“let’s do it. ‘Easy’ one back for you. Massive opportunity for me and anything could happen 👊” said Price to Tyson Fury.

Price REALLY wants the Tyson Fury fight. Unfortunately, the feelings aren’t mutual. Fury says he’s not interested in fighting Price at this stage in his career. He’s targeting Tony Bellew, Manuel Charr, Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder.

Price lost his last fight to Christian Hammer by a 7th round knockout on February 4. Price was also knocked out by Erkan Teper in the 2nd round in 2015. Price was knocked out twice by Tony Thompson in 2013.

Here are Price’s defeats in the last 4 years:

• Tony Thompson – TKO 2

• Tony Thompson – TKO 5

• Erkan Teper – TKO 2

• Christian Hammer – TKO 7

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Price gets knocked out by Sokolowski on Saturday night. Sokolowski has one knockout on his record, and that makes him a threat to Price. If Sokolowski can take Price beyond the 5th, he’ll have a decent chance of knocking him out just based on Price gassing out.
