By Chris Williams: Danny Jacobs (32-2, 29 KOs) says he wants to go after unbeaten former junior middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (26-0, 20 KOs) in his next fight after his bout this Saturday night against Luis Arias (18-0, 9 KOs) on HBO.

Jacobs says he wants to only fight the best, and he’s not going to be able to fight his main targets, IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs), since both are still tied in for a rematch with each other. Jacobs feels that Charlo is the next best thing to those types of fighters when he goes down the line of the top middleweights in the division.

“Charlo can get it,” said Jacobs to the news media. “He’s a top contender, right? He considers himself to be one of the best. We’re going after Charlo. He can come over to HBO. He’s not contractually tied to anyone. I want the best, and if I can’t get the best, I’m going down the line,” said Jacobs.

Charlo is game for fighting Jacobs. Adding Jacobs’ scalp to Charlo’s resume would turn him into an overnight star. Charlo would then be the one that British promoter Eddie Hearn would be looking to sign, and promote all over the world instead of Jacobs.

Jacobs needs Charlo for him to increase his popularity in a real hurry in the boxing world. Charlo is the biggest fight that Jacobs can take at 160 once you remove Canelo, Golovkin, Billy Joe Saunders and David Lemieux from the equation. Jacobs clearly isn’t going to be getting any of those guys in the first half of 2018, and likely not even in the second half either.

It’s unknown if Jacobs, 30, is completely serious about wanting to fight Charlo, since he and his promoter Eddie Hearn have been talking about wanting to go after the winner of the Billy Joe Saunders vs. David Lemieux fight on December 16th. Jacobs wants the winner of that fight. However, Golden Boy Promotions is the co-promoter for Lemieux, and it’s HIGHLY unlikely that they’re going to waste matching him against Jacobs in a small money fight.

Golden Boy is targeting Canelo for Lemieux’s possible next fight after the Saunders title fight IF he wins that fight. Golden Boy isn’t going to put Lemieux in a risky fight against Jacobs on regular HBO. There’s no money in a Lemieux vs. Jacobs fight. The money is with Canelo vs. Lemieux. The reality is that until Jacobs can get either Golovkin or Canelo to fight him, he’s going to be stuck fighting the contenders in the middleweight division.

Charlo would be good, although it doesn’t appear that Hearn wants that fight for Jacobs. Hearn has already said that Charlo isn’t in his immediate future for Jacobs. Hearn wants Lemieux or Saunders. Hearn will have huge problems trying to get either of them, because Jacobs doesn’t have their popularity, Hearn does have deep enough pockets to overpay Lemieux or Saunders to fight Jacobs, but the money will still likely wind up as less than what those guys can make fighting Canelo or GGG.
