Image: McGregor shocked at scoring for Mayweather fight

By Jim Dower: Conor McGregor was stunned to learn that 2 of the judges had Floyd Mayweather Jr. up 8 rounds to 1 at the time of the stoppage in the 10th round last Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

McGregor feels that the judges were “very biased” with the way that they scored the fight, as he felt that he was down 5 rounds to 4 to Mayweather, not 8 rounds to 1 like of the judges had it scored. Additionally, McGregor wasn’t pleased with the way that referee Robert Byrd quickly stopped the fight in round 10. McGregor says he wasn’t hurt, he was just tired. He felt that the referee should have permitted him to make it out of the round so he could catch his breath.

McGregor felt hat he deserved to go out on his shield rather than have a referee stop the fight while he was still standing and fighting back. The stoppage by Byrd has been questioned by a lot of boxing and MMA fans. With the huge money, the fans paid to see the fight, the way the fight ended was a downer for them. Byrd should have let the fight play out to the logical conclusion. It’s never a good thing when a referee stops the fight too quickly, but when it’s a high-profile fight like Mayweather-McGregor, you can argue it hurts the sport to have the fight stopped too quickly.

“I think that’s very, very biased. I’m actually shocked at that,” said McGregor via Fighthub. ”I thought I won the first three rounds clearly. Fourth round can be argued either way, we’ll say 3-1. And then he started to take over then and I thought I snuck in 8, Round 8, and then he won 9 and got the stoppage in 10. So, what was that, 5-4 into the final round and he got the win,” said McGregor.

Boxing News 24 had McGregor up 5 rounds to 4 at the time of the stoppage in round 10. The scoring by the judges seemed to make zero sense. That’s how it goes in boxing though. The judges scores though 9 rounds were as follows: 89-82, 87-83 and 89-81. Those are wide scores in favor of Mayweather. They don’t seem to go with the fight that took place that night.

It appears the judges weren’t giving McGregor credit for anything he was doing in the fight. Of course, it was a given that McGregor would have needed a knockout to beat a fighter like Mayweather, especially with the scoring by the 3 judges. McGregor was up against it in this fight. It’s nice that Mayweather beat Rocky Marciano’s record in winning his 50th victory, but the scoring was way off from the way that many boxing and MMA fans saw the fight. It’s a good thing the fight didn’t go to a decision, because this might have been another black eye for the sport of boxing.

”I would’ve liked to have seen the final bell. I think I deserved to see the final bell but what can you do?” said McGregor.

The referee pulled the trigger lightning fast in stopping the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight in round 10. With all the money, the fans had paid to see the fight, it’s disappointing to see this kind of ending. That’s one of the differences between MMA and boxing. In MMA, the fights tend to play out longer until someone is very, very hurt. In boxing, the referees jump in quickly if a fighter even looks slightly buzzed. I think needs to change. Quick stoppages in boxing are not a good thing.
