By Dan Ambrose: Danny Jacobs wants to put pressure on Gennady “GGG” Golovkin to give him a rematch, and believes the best way to do that is to keep winning. Jacobs (32-2, 29 KOs) wants to avenge his 12 round unanimous decision defeat that he suffered at the hands of Triple G earlier this year on March 18.

Jacobs thinks that he can put enough pressure on the 35-year-old Golovkin so that he has no choice but to give him a rematch. Golovkin doesn’t have an open schedule for a rematch with Jacobs right now.

Golovkin will be defending his IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight titles against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 16. Depending on the outcome of that fight, Golovkin could get back in the ring to fight Canelo in a rematch or look for a final unification fight against WBO belt holder Billy Joe Saunders.

Jacobs is not in a good place right now to demand a rematch or even be considered for one. He lost to Golovkin, and he hasn’t fought since. Jacobs’ management doesn’t have a fight ironed out for him. It’s been 4 months of inactivity for Jacobs since his loss to Golovkin. It’s normal for fighters to be out of boxing 4 to 6 months following a loss.

With no scheduled fights, Jacobs could be out of the ring for a long longer than 4-6 months. We could be looking at Jacobs staying out of the ring for the remainder of this year unless his management comes up with a fight for him. Fighting only once in 2017 is not good news for Jacobs’ career. Jacobs only fought once in 2016. If Jacobs is done for the year in 2017, it would be hard for him to put GGG in a corner to make him want to fight him in a rematch.

“I’m very hopeful of that. I think if I continue to do what I need to do, and be victorious each time I’m in the ring, then I think it’ll be kind of like, ‘Hey Golovkin, you have no [choice]. You can’t really retire unless you give that guy his rematch,’” said Jacobs to Caryn A. Tate from Fighthype.com.

Jacobs is talking like he’s going to start being a busy fighter. If that does happen, it’s good for Jacobs. He could very well put pressure on Golovkin and create a demand with the boxing public for a second fight between them. Jacobs isn’t going to do that fighting once a year. That’s not realistic. I don’t know what the hang-up is with Jacobs’ management not to be keeping him busy with at least 2 fights a year. That’s not asking a lot.

For Jacobs to create REAL pressure for a Golovkin rematch, he’s probably going to need to fight 3 times a year. Since Jacobs isn’t even twice a year, he can pretty much forget about ever getting a second fight against GGG. WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders chose to fight Willie Monroe Jr. in his next title defense on September 16 instead of facing Jacobs. That’s got to be a huge disappointment for Jacobs, because it would have given him a chance to pick up the WBO belt and use it as bait to get a second fight against Golovkin. That was Jacobs’ best option for a rematch with Golovkin. Win the WBO belt, and wait passively for Golovkin or Saul Canelo Alvarez to come to you to give you a big money fight It’s too bad Jacobs’ management couldn’t get him a fight against Saunders. You’d have to favor Jacobs over Saunders.

”I think I’ll be kind of putting him in a corner,” said Jacobs about Golovkin. ”But this is boxing, he could say he doesn’t want to fight me. In my heart I don’t feel he wants to. But if I do what I have to do, it’ll kind of be forced upon him,” said Jacobs.

Golovkin likely has reasons for not wanting to fight Jacobs again. It’s pretty easy to see why Golovkin wouldn’t want o take a second fight against Jacobs. The reasons for Golovkin to not want to fight Jacobs twice likely involve these things:

– Golovkin vs. Jacobs brought in just 160,000 buys on HBO PPV. The boxing fans were not interested in this fight enough for them to want to pay to see it.

– Jacobs choosing to skip the IBF’s mandated same day check weight on the day of the fight. With Jacobs electing to bypass the International Boxing Federation’s weigh check on the day of the fight, it gave Jacobs an advantage over Golovkin. It wasn’t an even playing field when it came to the weight for the fight. If Golovkin fights Jacobs again, what’s to keep Jacobs from skipping the same day weigh check a second time in order to gain an edge over Golovkin? It would bother me if I had to fight someone who didn’t have to without fluids like I had to on the day of the fight. I don’t know that would want to fight them again if though they were going to pull that again.

– Jacobs’ rumored weight on the night of the fight. Jacobs was rumored be at 190 lbs. on the night of his fight with Golovkin. If that weight is true, then Jacobs had a 20 pound weight advantage over Golovkin. The weight for Golovkin was 170 on the night of the Jacobs fight. I don’t know how Jacobs could lose 30 pounds of water weight to make 160 and put it back on overnight without being sluggish. Whatever the case, if the weight is correct, then it would be insane for Golovkin to fight Jacobs again. That’s too much weight. Jacobs should be fighting at light heavyweight or super middleweight if he’s going to rehydrate to 190.

– Golovkin doesn’t have a lot to gain in fighting Jacobs again. Golovkin wants to beat Canelo, and then fight him in a rematch. There might be a possibility of a third Canelo-Golovkin fight. If not, Golovkin would target Saunders for the WBO belt. Golovkin then wants to move up to super middleweight to win the titles in that division. Jacobs doesn’t have anything going for him. He’s not a champion, and he’s not currently active. If Jacobs was smart, he would move up in weight to the super middleweight division now, and grab one of the world titles. By winning a title at 168, Jacobs would have the bait to lure Golovkin to fight him in the future at some point. I don’t know if Golovkin would fight Jacobs right away after he moves up to super middleweight, but he would possibly fight him at some point once he starts working his way through the difference champions in collecting the titles.
