By Scott Gilfoid: Former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury is saying that he plans on resuming his boxing career on May 13 against an opponent still to be determined. Before the 28-year-old Fury can resume his career, he’s going to need to get his license to fight back from the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC). Thus far, Fury doesn’t have his license, and he’s two months away from the May 13th fight date that he’s talking about.

Fury says he doesn’t have an opponent yet for his May 13 comeback, which isn’t all that surprising given that he doesn’t have a boxing license yet.

“Breaking news. Return of the MAC, May 13th, working on an opponent more news to follow,” said Fury on his Twitter on Monday. “Keep my belts warm guys as they belong to the king. Whoever got my belts I’m coming for you! Big or small.”

Well, if the 6’9” Fury does resume his career, he’s going to have his work cut out for him. I don’t see Fury being able to beat any of the current champions in the division. Even when Fury was at his best in 2015, I think he wouldn’t beat any of the guys holding titles right now. The contenders in the heavyweight division would give Fury HUGE problems.

We’re probably not going to see Fury fight anyone good until he gets a big money fight against one of the three world champions. The likely scenario I see happening with Fury is him facing 2nd tier fighters for a while, and then progressing to bottom feeders in the division. Once Fury gets some wins under his belt against strictly fodder opposition, then a big cash out fight with Anthony Joshua will almost surely get made. I do not see Fury fighting Deontay Wilder or Joseph Parker. Those would be dangerous fights for Fury, and the money wouldn’t be as good for him like it would against Joshua.

Fury hasn’t fought since beating Wladimir Klitschko in a boring 12 round fight in November 2015. Fury won by a 12 round decision, but he mostly slapped at the air and circled the ring all night long. In winning that fight, Fury captured Wladimir’s IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO heavyweight titles. Fury lost his IBF belt right away when he failed to fight the mandatory challenger for the sanctioning body. Fury later on vacated his IBO, WBA, WBO titles due to him having medical problems. His license was later suspended by the BBBofC.

If Fury wants to win back his lost IBF and WBA straps, then he’s going to need to face the winner of the April 29 fight between Klitschko and Joshua. I’m not holding my breath waiting for that fight to happen. Yeah, Fury will eventually face the winner of the Klitschko vs. Joshua fight, but it might take a while before he does.

Fury can make good cash just beating fodder opposition. He doesn’t even need to fight the good guys for him to rake in the cash. It’s going to be interesting to see who Fury’s May 13th opponent will be. This should be amusing to say the least. I hope for Fury’s sake he burns off some of the weight that he’s put on. It would look bad if he comes into the ring over 300 lbs. on the night.
