By Chris Williams: Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler says Daniel Jacobs is the opponent to allow him to show off all his full ability in their fight on Saturday. Loeffler feels that Golovkin was sloppy in the past in his fights when he wasn’t totally motivated by an opponent. Golovkin was hit more than he should have been in his last outing against Kell Brook. Loeffler sees that as a motivation issue for Golovkin, but it won’t be a problem for him against Jacobs.

Golovkin realizes that he cannot fight with only a portion of his capabilities because he’ll lose if he’s fully engaged for this fight. If Golovkin isn’t razor sharp, he could be knocked out in the 1st round. We saw what Jacobs did against a very good fighter in Peter Quillin in his 1st round knockout. If Golovkin comes out in a careless manner against Jacobs, he might regret it.

Jacobs is going to be at his best as well on Saturday night, and it’s going to come down to which of these two middleweight champion has the best game plan. It also might come down to luck.

“This is what Gennady has always wanted. People think Danny has the biggest chance,” said Loeffler to the latimes.com. “He’s bigger, has fast hands, power. This is what motivates Gennady. This is what will allow Gennady to really show his skills. He was a little sloppy and not as focused when he was not feeling really threatened. Here, he’s going to be razor sharp.”

In fairness to Kell Brook, Golovkin looked like he was trying to defend himself the best that he could in that fight. It was just that Brook was very accurate with his punches, and he was able to take advantage of Triple G’s flawed defensive skills. Brook can’t help it that Golovkin is poor at defending himself.

Golovkin’s defensive flaws have been disguised for many years due to his offense being so good. Also, when you’re facing guys that don’t have a lot to threaten you with, it’s easy to knock them out quickly without getting hit a lot. Golovkin’s resume is not rock solid at all. He’s fought a lot of poor opposition, and that’s just the reality. So for Brook to have hit Golovkin a lot, it wasn’t because he was being sloppy due to the motivation not being there. It was more of a case of Golovkin not having the defensive skills that he needed for him to avoid getting tagged.

IBF cruiserweight champion Murat Gassiev thinks Golovkin will knockout Jacobs by the 6th. I beg to differ. I think Golovkin might not see the 6th if he doesn’t protect his chin in this fight.

“This (Golovkin-Jacobs) fight is good for all of us,” said Gassiev to Fightnews.com. “It’s 50-50 fight. Jacobs is a great fighter. Has good power, good punch – good test for GGG. Training camp was great, he had a lot good sparring partners. He did great. I think we will see what happens on Saturday. Did I do some sparring rounds with GGG? Not yet, maybe in the future… he’s too strong for me! Prediction? Big KO by Gennady in the sixth round!”
