By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. took to Instagram last night to gloat about being wealthy; saying he’s happily retired, and has made wise investments. Mayweather also showed a photo of the $100 million check he received for his mega-fight against Manny Pacquiao last year in May 2015.

Mayweather points out that other people have to work. It’s unclear what initiated Mayweather’s desire to post this latest Instagram message to the boxing world. Is Mayweather starting to have doubts about whether he should resume his pro career?

Is his latest post a way for Mayweather to justify not having restart his career? It’s hard to say. With all the bragging that Mayweather is doing about being smart, rich and making wise investments, what he doesn’t point out is why he would reject returning to the ring and making even more money. Mayweather could possibly get close to $100 million for a second fight against Pacquiao.

Even if it were less than that, Mayweather could still an absurd amount of money in a second fight against Pacquiao. Some boxing fans think that Mayweather is afraid to fight Pacquiao a second time now that his injured right shoulder has been surgically repaired. Pacquiao fought Mayweather with an injured shoulder last year.

Pacquiao admitted himself afterwards that he was only 60% on the night he fought Mayweather. Despite not having both arms working, Pacquiao STILL almost beat Mayweather. That’s pretty impressive. It also shows that Mayweather might not be as good a fighter as some people think. If Pacquiao was able to come close to beating Pacquiao with only one good arm, what do you think he would have done if he had both arms working for him?

Here’s what Mayweather said about his money and career on his Instagram:

“floydmayweatherGotta love these backseat drivers so worried about another man’s legacy instead of trying to write their own,” said Mayweather. “Ultimately, I will always have the last laugh. This is just one of my many checks, a cool $100,000,000.00 that I still have every dime of. Y’all still have to work however, I’m happily retired. At the end of the day, it’s them Benjamin Franklins that matter to me, so the jokes on you. I’ve made smart investments, sorry for those who thought that I couldn’t read, write, or count. Y’all call them watches, I call them time pieces. Y’all call them boats, I call them yachts. Y’all call them houses, I call them mansions. Y’all charter jets and we own jets. #TMT”

Mayweather has been reportedly spending a lot of his money on expensive and jewelry since retiring. Those are items that depreciate quickly and don’t have a great resale value. If Mayweather still has all of his money after retiring, it would be surprising to some, because he’s been spending money obviously.

It would be interesting to see what kind of fights Mayweather would take if he did return to the sport to resume his pro career. I think there are some guys that Mayweather would not fight no matter what. Here are the fighters I think Mayweather WOULD NOT fight:

– Keith Thurman

– Gennady Golovkin

– Saul Canelo Alvarez

– Shawn Porter

– Tim Bradley

– Jessie Vargas

– Charlo brothers

– Erislandy Lara

– Julian Williams

– Demetrius Andrade

Here are the fighters that I see Mayweather potentially fighting:

– Manny Pacquiao

– Danny Garcia

– Conor McGregor

I think there’s only three guys that Mayweather would come back for, and that’s Pacquiao, McGregor and Danny Garcia. With Thurman about to fight Danny Garcia, it’s likely that Thurman will easily beat Garcia. That will remove Garcia as a potential opponent for Mayweather if he ever returns to the ring. It would look bad if Mayweather came out of retirement to fight a recently beaten Garcia.

Mayweather really didn’t set the world on fire in many of his last six fights of his career. When you think about it, Mayweather took the easy path much of the time. The only two really good fighters that Mayweather fought were Saul Canelo Alvarez and Pacquiao. Those wins weren’t as impressive as they would seem at first glance due to the middleweight-sized Canelo having to melt down to 152 to fight Mayweather at a catch-weight. Besides that, Canelo was only 23 when he took the fight with Mayweather.

Canelo is a much better and much BIGGER fighter now than he was back then. How would Mayweather do against a 180lb Canelo right now? I think Mayweather would lose on size alone to Canelo. If Pacquiao were totally healthy with both shoulders, I would give him a very good chance of beating Mayweather right now.

The problem with Mayweather coming back to boxing right now is he would have a lot of pressure on him to fight not only Pacquiao, but also Keith Thurman, Terence Crawford and likely Errol Spence Jr. I don’t think Mayweather would want to fight those guys. It would look bad if all Mayweather does is return to the sport to cherry pick guys like Danny Garcia or Conor McGregor. It’s bad enough that Mayweather ended his career against the non-relevant Andre Berto instead of one of the top guys like Thurman.
