By Scott Gilfoid: Tony Bellew seemed to lose his senses completely after David Haye appeared to take a shot at him with a left hook to the jaw at Wednesday’s press conference to hype their March 4 fight at the O2 Arena in London, England. Their fight will be televised on Sky Box Office pay-per-view in the UK.

You can argue that Bellew was asking for it when he pressed his face against Haye during the face-off between them. The next thing you know it, Haye throws a lighting fast punch and Bellew shoves him away. The security quickly stepped in to make sure the two fighters couldn’t get at each other.

In the meantime, Bellew and Haye started jabbering at each other back and forth. I could barely understand every fourth word Bellew said due to his heavily accented English. Haye was a lot more understandable with what he was saying. I heard him call Bellew a fat, blown up light heavyweight, and said he was going to knock him out on the night. Bellew was pretty shaken by the incident. His face was red, not because of the punch, but because he was flapping his gums so much without taking the proper breaths.

I’m just surprised that Bellew and Haye were allowed to get this close to each other. Anyone could have seen that the two of them were going to have problems when they faced off. I don’t see it being any different in the future face-offs between them if there are any.

I don’t see what Bellew (28-2-1, 18 KOs) was so upset about. It’s not as if he wasn’t asking for trouble by putting his face up against Haye’s. Bellew should have known that he was inviting trouble by putting his face against Haye’s. We saw what happened to Dereck Chisora when he tried to walk up on Haye four years ago at the Vitali Klitschko – Chisora post-fight press conference.. Haye tore into him and put him down.

Bellew said to skysports.com this about his face-off problems with Haye:

“We were talking, the security got a little bit too close and when David stepped up, he jammed his nose right up against my face, so I pushed him back to move him away from me and he punched me with a left hook. If that’s the best he’s got, he’s in trouble on March 4 because I thought he hit harder than that, he definitely hits harder in sparring but is what it is, he’s an idiot.”

I hate to say it, but Bellew looks rattled already. He was jabbering a mile a minute after his altercation with Haye. Instead of keeping a stiff upper lip and staying calm in the moment, Bellew got totally flustered. Haye had gotten into his head completely, and Bellew looked like he had lost his senses completely. If this was the actual battlefield at the O2 on March 4, I Bellew would be too mentally disorganized to think clearly after the first punch lands from Haye.

If Bellew is going to lose his mind each time Haye takes a shot at him, then this fight is not going to last. The great fighters are stay calm when they get hit. Bellew came unglued completely. It was pretty sad to see. I guess that’s why he’s considered a paper champion at cruiserweight in the eyes of a lot of boxing fans. Bellew hasn’t even fought his WBC mandatory challenger Mairis Briedis yet. Some fans think Bellew is dodging that fight due to Briedis being such a good fighter.

Well, if Bellew doesn’t want any problems with any future altercations with Haye, then he should keep his distance from him, because he was asking for trouble by putting his face against his. That stuff might work against Bellew’s other opponents, but apparently it doesn’t work with Haye. In the future, Bellew can either keep a safe distance from Haye or Mathroom Sport, the promoters for the event, can have a fence put in between them like they did with Haye when he fought Dereck Chisora four years ago. A nice sturdy fence would be the proper solution in keeping the two fighters from getting at each other until the night of the fight. But in looking at the way that Bellew appeared to be hit so quickly by Haye, I can’t see their fight going long at all. Bellew is too slow with his reflexes. Haye is going to be able to hit Bellew at will with shots, and I think the fight will be over in the 1st round. I just hope there’s a good undercard that comes with the fight, because the boxing fans that purchase tickets for the fight and pay to see it on Sky Box Office pay-per-view might feel a tad angry with the fast knockout.

I think the fans believe it will go a fair amount of rounds before the knockout occurs. I don’t see that happening. I think it’ll be over in the 1st round, as soon as Haye hits Bellew with a good shot. That’s why I think it’s sad that Bellew is getting a fight against Haye without having to prove himself at heavyweight. I for one think Bellew should earn the fight against Haye by going through a decent test first against Dillian Whyte.

If Bellew can beat Whyte, only then should he get a fight against Haye. Do I think Bellew can beat Whyte? No way. Do I think Bellew could even beat Dave Allen? No, I think Allen would smash him too. These guys are simply too big for Bellew, who is really little more than a pumped up light heavyweight in my opinion. You can pump up from 175 to 220lbs to fight at heavyweight, but that doesn’t make you a heavyweight. I think we’re going to find that out on March 4 when Haye and Bellew step foot inside the O2 Arena in London, UK to start fighting.

“He looked very rattled, very shook, very angry, I don’t know he might have had a domestic this morning, but he was very angry and very anxious,” said Bellew about Haye. “He was jumping in and around me, and when he put his face in my face, I don’t want someone’s face in my face, he’s invaded my personal space, so it has to be addressed.”

I think Bellew is projecting a tad bit by saying that Haye looked rattled. As far as I could tell, it was Bellew who looked like he’d lost it completely. He did not look like he was able to think at all. Further, I saw Bellew stick his face up against Haye’s face, and not the other way around. I think Haye was willing to humor Bellew by doing the face to face bit, but it looked he quickly tired of it when the punch was thrown. It happened so quickly though. I’m not sure if Bellew said something to set Haye off or if he pushes his face against his a little too hard to cause him to want to smash him.

It was just a brief physical altercation between Haye and Bellew. It’s not a big deal. If the two of them had started trading back and forth, then yeah, I could see it as a big deal. It wasn’t anything like that. It was just that one bit of violence and then a bunch of trash talking back and forth.
