By Eric Baldwin: In a highly competitive bout, undefeated #4 IBF Robert Easter Jr. (17-0, 14 KOs) defeated #3 IBF Richard Commey (24-1, 22 KOs) by a 12 round split decision on Friday night to win the vacant International Boxing Federation lightweight title at the Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania. The judges scored the fight 115-112 114-113 for Easter and 114-113 for Commey. The fight was televised by Premier Boxing Champions on Spike.

Easter was knocked down in the 8th round by a right hand from Commey. Easter looked like the better fighter in the first half of the fight, but Commey came on to make it close by dominating most of the 2nd half of the fight. Easter spent too much time throwing single power shots, and not putting his hands together.

In the 12th round, Easter buckled Commey’s legs after nailing him with a big right hand to the head. Commey was able to hold on to get out of the round. Commey even came back a little in the last minute to get the better of Easter.

With this win, Easter is now the IBF lightweight champion. It’s doubtful that Easter will hold onto the IBF title for long because he’s got too many flaws in his game.

Easter Jr. showed good single punch power, but he was struggling with the hand speed and power from Commey. You can argue that the fight could have been a victory for Commey because it was that close. Easter Jr. did not distinguish himself in the fight. He still looks very vulnerable because he spends too much time throwing single pot shots. If he has to fight someone good in the lightweight division that throws a lot of straight punches, then Easter will be in trouble. He was fortunate tonight that Commey kept throwing wide punches that frequently missed. If he had straightened his shots out, he likely would have won an easy decision. Easter lives and dies by the knockout, but he can definitely be beaten by the top guys at lightweight.
