By Eric Baldwin: Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam met with defeat on Saturday in losing to Mihel Borges of Brazil in the first day of Olympic competition in the light heavyweight division. Borges defeated the 32-year-old N’Dam by a three-round unanimous decision in the first round of competition in the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil.

It was hard to pick between the two fighters because both guys were landing their shots properly. The judges thought the younger 25-year-old Borges had done enough to get the victory, but could have easily gone the other way. That’s the tough part of amateur scoring system. A lot of the punches that land aren’t counted by the judges unless they land in an area of the glove that satisfies them. N’Dam is not a light heavyweight, and he was asking for trouble ion fighting in this weight class.

What professional fighters need to understand is the amateur fights in the Olympic competition are a different sport entirely. The amateur fights are fought at a much quicker pace and the emphasis is more on the quicker, lighter shots than on the harder punches that the pros throw. N’Dam didn’t seem to realize how different the sport was today, as he was loading up too much instead of focusing on throwing fast shots.

N’Dam previously held the WBO middleweight title August 2012 to October 2012. He was soundly beaten by Peter Quillin to lose his WBO title.

In 2004, N’Dam ought in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, in fighting for Cameroon at middleweight.

It’s got to be a little embarrassing for N’Dam to be eliminated so fast in the competition. N’Dam is a good pro fighter, and he was expected to go further in the Olympics competition than he did. But the loss shows how difficult boxing is from the pros.
