By Allan Fox: It’s thought that it wouldn’t be in IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) to slug it out with challenger Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs) in their rematch on July 9, because Wladimir has the much better punching power and the superior hand speed.

Fury, however, is saying he welcomes a more aggressive Wladimir inside the ring in their rematch, because he likes his chances against the 6’6” Ukrainian fighter if he chooses to slug with him.

In their previous fight last November, Wladimir and Fury spent most of the fight staring at each other without throwing many punches.

You can call it a tactical fight if you must, but it was more of a staring contest than a fight. It has to have been one of the most boring fights in memory.

Wladimir didn’t want to get countered or hit while in coming forward, and Fury appeared afraid as well to commit to anything at all. Fury talked big afterwards like he’d done a great job in beating the 40-year-old Wladimir by a 12 round unanimous decision, but that’s the furthest thing from the truth. Fury had not fought well. He had done just enough to barely win a decision.

“If you want to fight, happy days… Christmas has come early for me!” said Fury to the Face to Face Fury/Klitschko special.

Wladimir wants to correct the mistakes he made in the previous fight with Fury. The only mistake Wladimir can acknowledge that he made in the previous fight with the 27-year-old Fury was not letting his hands go in the way that he needed to for him to have a chance to win the contest. This is why Wladimir is promising to throw a great deal more punches in the rematch than he did last time.

Whether he can back up his tough talk is the big question. If Wladimir can’t throw more punches than he did last time, then he’s going to need to count on getting Fury out of there with the few punches he does throw, because he’s not going to be able to win a decision against Fury by throwing only a handful of punches in each round because that won’t work at all. It’s already been proven that it doesn’t work against Fury if you don’t throw a lot of punches.

If Wladimir does beat Fury in the rematch, then he should think about looking to cash out and/or retire from the sport, because he’s likely to take a lot more losses if he chooses to hang around for much longer. Wladimir hasn’t looked like the fighter that he once was in his last couple of fights. There’s nothing special that Fury did to bring about Wladimir’s poor performance. It just looked an age related thing for Wladimir, and that’s not going to get any better for him as he continues to get older.

The winner of the Klitschko vs. Fury fight will have some interesting options available to them. They can choose to just defend the titles against the normal contenders or they can look to take some real risks by fighting in unification bouts against the other heavyweight champions Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua. There’s money to be made in fighting unification matches against Joshua and Wilder, but there’s also a lot of risk.
