Victor Ortiz vs. Andre Berto in the works for April 30

Andre BertoBy Dan Ambrose: Five years after battling it out in one of the most exciting fights of 2011, former welterweight world champions Victor Ortiz (31-5-2, 24 KOs) and Andre Berto (30-4, 23 KOs) will be facing off for a second time on April 30 on Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on Fox from the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

The Berto-Ortiz fight is expected to be announced this coming week, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. PBC will be announcing a series of fights this week just as Showtime Sports made a big announcement of fights last week for their network.

A much younger Ortiz defeated Berto in their fight in 2011 after knocking him down twice in the fight. Ortiz was also knocked down twice in that same fight, but he was able to take over in the last half of the bout to get the victory. Unfortunately for Ortiz, his boxing career went completely downhill shortly after that fight with him losing three consecutive fights to Floyd Mayweather Jr., Josesito Lopez and Luis Ortiz.

Ortiz has since comeback to win his last two fights against Manuel Perez and Gilberto Sanchez Leon. However, those are not major contenders in the 147lb division, and the victories for Ortiz failed to prove that he’s ironed out the problems that led to him losing three straight fights. Berto is technically a major contender as far as his #3 ranking with the World Boxing Council goes, but he’s really little better off than Perez and Leon.

Berto is clearly not the fighter that Ortiz beat in 2011, and neither is Ortiz. Both of them have lost a portion of their game and it’s impossible to see either of them ever getting it back at this point of their careers. The Berto-Ortiz fight might be about as good as it gets for the two of them.

Berto is ranked high enough to get a title shot against WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that he’ll soon be getting a shot against Garcia no matter what happens in his rematch with Ortiz. All three of those fighters are with Al Haymon, which means there’s a pretty good chance that that both Berto and Ortiz will be getting a crack at Garcia in the near future.

Berto, 32, lost his last fight to Mayweather in September of 2015 in losing a 12 round decision. It was not a competitive fight unfortunately for Berto and the fans, but Berto got a good payday out of the fight. He hasn’t fought since then because he hasn’t needed to.

Berto and Ortiz were supposed to face each other in a rematch four years ago in 2012. That fight failed to happen after Berto tested positive for a banned substance. Also, an injury Berto suffered to his left biceps during training for the rematch kept the fight from happening again.

Ortiz has been talking a lot recently with the media, and he says he wants a rematch with Mayweather. It doesn’t look like that’s going to happen, and I think Ortiz is well aware of that. But at least he’s getting a second fight against Berto, and that should give him a decent payday as well as a bump up in the rankings.
