Berchelt stops Jupp in 6th round

By Jim Dower: In an impressive display of punching power, No.1 rated WBO super featherweight contender Miguel Berchelt (29-1, 26 KOs) blasted out Number #3 George Jupp (13-2, 4 KOs) by a 6th round knockout on Saturday night to win the vacant interim WBO super featherweight title at the Polyforum Zamná in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico.

Berchelt put Jupp on the canvas three times in the fight in knocking him down in round 4, 5 and the final time in the 6th. Berchelt has too much punishing power and talent for Jupp to deal with in this fight. The official time of the stoppage was 1:55.

Berchelt was supposed to have been fighting for the WBO super featherweight title against champion Roman “Rocky” Martinez, but he suffered an injury in training camp and could not take the fight. It’s quite fortunate for Martinez that he didn’t take the fight because he would have had a really tough time beating Berchelt.

Martinez already took a terrible beating in his last fight against Orlando Salido last September. That fight was scored a draw, but most boxing fans saw it as a clear win for Salido. However, ignoring the controversial decision, it was a fight Martinez took a real bad beating in.

Martinez might want to consider vacating his WBO title rather than take the fight with Berchelt, because it’s not going to be a big money fight for him. It might be better for Martinez to try and avoid that fight in order to go for the bigger money rematch with Salido.
Jupp made a bad decision in agreeing to fight Berchelt. He might have been better off going in a different direction.

Berchelt kind of surprised a lot of people with the way he really went after Jupp tonight. Jupp wasn’t ready for that kind of attack. If he fights like that against Martinez, then he could take his title.
