Rocky Martinez willing to unify titles after Miguel Berchelt

Puerto Rican Roman “Rocky” Martinez, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior lightweight champion, is ready for an unification bout against Mexican Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas after his March 12th fight versus Miguel “El Alacran” Berchelt, at the Poliforum Zamna in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico.

Martinez (29-2-3, 17 KOs), who is going to face Berchelt (28-1, 25 KOs) in his second defense of the WBO 130-pound belt he won last year against Orlando “Siri” Salido, is confident he will beat Berchelt in March and then he wants to face Vargas (23-0-1, 17 KOs), the super featherweight World Boxing Council (WBC) king, in the summer.

“We are working hard for Berchelt, we are confident in a victory and after this bout we want to make a fight with Vargas to unify the titles. We know it will be a tremendous fight,” Martinez said. “I know that Vargas is a warrior like me, who has always said he would like to face me, so after beating Berchelt we can unify the titles.”

Martinez, a three-time 130 pounds WBO monarch, fought Salido twice in 2015, beating him in April by unanimous decision and ending in a draw in the second brawl in September. The first fight between Martinez-Salido was one of the favorites for “Fight of the Year” in 2015.

While Vargas also fought twice in 2015. In March he won by TKO in eight rounds over Will Tomlinson and then in November, beat Takashi Miura by TKO in the ninth round to gain the world title. This bout was selected as the “Fight of the Year” in 2015.

On Tuesday, February 23, Martinez will host a media workout at the Dorado Gym in Dirado, Puerto Rico, for his defense against Berchelt on March 12.
