By Dan Ambrose: Former IBF bantamweight champion Randy Caballero (23-0, 14 KOs) remained unbeaten with a 7th round stoppage win over Ruben Garcia (15-2-1, 6 KOs) in their scheduled 10 round bout on Friday night at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, in Indio, California. The fight took place in the featherweight division.

Garcia opted not to come out for the 8th round. He had been dropped in the 7th, and had taken a lot of punishment in that round and in the 6th.

It was a decent fight, but Caballero needs to be facing better opposition than this.
Unbeaten light welterweight Frankie Gomez (20-0, 13 KOs) stayed undefeated with a one-sided 10 round unanimous decision win over journeyman Silverio Ortiz (29-17, 15 KOs). In the co-feature bout. The final judge’ scores were 100-90, 100-90 and 100-90. Gomez showed good punching power in dominating Ortiz for 10 rounds in this mismatch.

“It feels so great to be back,” said Randy Caballero. “I felt strong and in control the whole time and glad I was able to shake off some of the ring rust. I am glad I was able to share this victory with my hometown and have them witness my return to the ring. I know I delivered a great fight, and I am ready for the next challenge. I want to become a world champion again, and I know the opportunity is coming soon.”

This fight took place at welterweight rather than in the light welterweight division. Gomez needs to be move up in weight to the welterweight division because he hasn’t fought at light welterweight since 2014. He’s a light welterweight in name only.

In Gomez’s previous fight, he weighed in at 150lbs in beating Jorge Silva by a 10 round decision last October. Gomez really needs to think seriously about moving up to welterweight because it’s not working out for him in trying to fight at light welterweight. He can’t make weight.

I can see Gomez winding up in the junior middleweight or middleweight division in the near future. He puts on weight too easily, and it’s hard to picture him being able to keep himself below 160 by the time he hits 30. Gomez is only 24-years-old now, and it’s troubling that he can’t even make 140. The thing is, I don’t think Gomez has the talent to excel at 147, 154 or 160.

Other boxing results on the card:

Rocco Santomuro UD 6 Jose Estrella
Neeco Macias TKO 5 Paul Mpendo
Alberto Fundora TKO 2 Cesar Ruiz
